Barrio Logan College Institute San Diego helps break the cycle of poverty. Our mission is to prepare students from underserved families to be the first in their families to go to college. We do this through free after-school programs that begin as early as third grade

The Challenge in Barrio Logan

Barrio Logan is a Latino community near downtown San Diego. The area is full of culture and history but faces many struggles. Local schools are under-resourced, and families face low education levels and high poverty.

  • 38% of adults age 25+ have only a high school diploma.
  • 3% of adults age 25+ hold a bachelor’s degree.
  • $25,000 is the average yearly income for a family of four.
  • 393 to 1 is the student-to-counselor ratio in local schools.

When kids don’t get the support they need, it can lead to more crime, less community involvement, and poor health. Education is the key to change.

Our Impact in San Diego

BLCI works with students from third grade until college graduation. Programs run Monday through Thursday from 3:30 pm to 8 pm, plus weekend field trips. In the summer, students join enrichment camps through community partners.

Results that matter:

  • 54% of BLCI middle and high school students keep a GPA above 3.5.
  • 100% of students graduate from high school.
  • 100% of students enroll in college.
  • Over 90% of students in our College Success Program stay in college and work toward a degree.

Why Our Programs Work

We keep class sizes small so students get the attention they need:

  • 60 to 1 – Student to advisor ratio. Advisors guide each student and family to plan a path to success.
  • 20 to 1 – Student to instructor ratio in our Steps to Success
  • 1 to 1 – Student to tutor ratio. Tutors also serve as mentors, building trust and confidence.
