10 Tips For Keeping Your New Year’s Resolutions

Happy New Year Everyone!

Like most of you, I am excited to have 2020 behind us and am looking forward to 2021. And what better way to start a New Year than with some resolutions. Research shows that as many as 50% of adults in the United States make New Year’s resolutions, but fewer than 10% actually keep them. I am definitely in the 90% category of people who don’t stick to their resolutions, but I am not going to let that keep me from trying again! Plus, studies have also shown that 46% of participants who made New Year’s resolutions were 10 times more likely to succeed than when deciding to make life changes at other times of the year.

10 Tips For Keeping Your New Year’s Resolutions

#1 Start Small
I will meditate for 5 minutes every day.

#2 Do Not Focus On A Specific Outcome
I will not expect meditation to turn me into the Dalai Lama.

#3 Create Resolutions That Are Realistic & Achievable
I will learn to play the ukulele by studying the chords for “Happy Birthday” rather than “Over The Rainbow”.

#4 Moderation Not Deprivation
The thought of completely eliminating sugar from my diet is overwhelming so I will instead reduce the amount of sugar I eat and find healthy, yummy alternatives.

#5 Piggyback Your Resolutions To Already Established Habits
I want to read on a consistent basis so I will read a book while eating lunch.

#6 Surround Yourself With People Who Have Like Minded Goals
I want to exercise more often. Since my husband loves to exercise, whenever he goes to the gym, that will be my cue to exercise as well.

#7 Make A Public Commitment By Telling Your Family & Friends
I am not sure how I could get any more public than by telling all of you about my resolutions!

#8 Learn And Adapt
If I am having trouble keeping one of my resolutions, I will try to figure out why and bend like a Willow tree instead of being rigid like an Oak tree (no offense to Oak trees, they are of course fabulous).

#9 Reward Yourself
I went way old school and bought a physical calendar with star stickers. Every time I am successful with one of my resolutions, I will reward myself with a star for that day.

#10 Keep Trying
I know myself so there is no way that I will be able to do these resolutions every day, but I won’t beat myself up about it. I will remind myself of why these resolutions are important to me and will keep trying because “I didn’t come this far to only come this far.”
