“When you give joy to other people, you get more joy in return.”
– Eleanor Roosevelt

Just in Time for Foster Youth (JIT) engages a caring community to help transition-age foster youth achieve self-sufficiency and well-being. JIT envisions a future in which every youth leaving the foster care system has a community of caring adults waiting for them after age 18. JIT believes consistent, long-term help from the heart is the foundation for the success of our youth so that they can thrive and enjoy productive, satisfying lives. Louarn Sorkin is the Just in Time Co-Founder, Honorary Board and BRAINtrust member.

#1 I am so fortunate to have been born and raised in beautiful San Diego.

#2 We have traveled to over 95 countries, large and small, however Paris, France is my favorite travel destination.

#3 My sweet little pet is a Netherlands Dward bunny named “Bebe”. She is an adorable litter box trained house rabbit and is full of personality and attitude.

#4 One of my favorite old movies is “Auntie Mame” with Rosaland Russell. I absolutely love her adventuresome, creative and positive attitude toward life!

#5 I have enjoyed several “fast and exciting” experiences including flying “ballast” for a camera in a Bell Ranger helicopter; lasting an unusually long time in a F15 jet simulator; flying in an experimental jet; racing my car around a great racetrack; photographing dolphins racing in front of a fast-moving yacht; and flying and doing stunt plane aerobatics with a pilot friend.

#6 It has always been important to me to give back to my community. I have enjoyed serving as a board member on several charitable boards including Just In Time for Foster Youth. My first community volunteer experience to get my Girl Scout “Community Service” badge was stuffing Gala invitations for the San Diego Symphony.

#7My dear husband, Alan, has been positively impacting my life for the last 31 years. Besides sharing a love for family, travel, theatre and performing arts, he also shares my dedication to helping our community through coaching, mentoring and financially supporting many non-profit organizations.

#8When Jeanette Day, a child advocacy attorney, called Diane Cox and me to help her coordinate some holiday baskets for her former foster youth clients, we were so pleased to meet the youth and add a little joy to their holiday. That project was the beginning of an amazing 20-plus-year journey to grow Just In Time for Foster Youth.

#9 “Life Changing Choices” is a truly heartwarming book written by some of our amazing former foster youth.

#10 Just in Time is extending their community-based model to other cities and states across the country so that all young people exiting foster care will have access to a reliable, responsive and real community.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
