Coming Together To Empower Women Transitioning Out Of Domestic Violence Shelters

Soroptimist International is a worldwide philanthropic organization of women whose mission of “Investing in Dreams” is accomplished through local club programs leading to social and economic empowerment for women and girls. In 1997, the Soroptimist Clubs of North San Diego and Poway teamed up to create a Domestic Violence Transitional Housing Program. This program for survivors of domestic violence moves families from dependency and abuse to a safe, self-sustaining life by providing 12 months of housing, mentorship, and financial help. Since the program began in 1997, 79 Moms and 187 children have successfully graduated to live independent lives. The need in our community is now greater than ever.

Soroptimist supports many programs including Through the Live Your Dream where grants are provided to women who provide the primary financial support for their families. These grants give the women resources they need to improve their education, skills, and employment prospects. The Dream It, Be It program reaches girls in secondary school who face obstacles to their future success. “The program has given the girls the opportunity to open their minds and view their future differently. I experienced the change in them from day one to the end of the program,”shared America Briseno of ASES Meadowbrook Middle School.

During the past year the clubs have contributed a total of over $112,000 to fund these programs and other programs empowering women and girls. The organization raises funds through the annual Hats and Heels event to support victims of domestic violence and other programs empowering women and children. The event on Sunday April 24 at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar will feature a lovely luncheon complete with a Champagne Happy Hour as well as a fantastic silent and live auction. The guest speaker will be Summer Stephan, San Diego County District Attorney. For sponsorship opportunities please contact Pam Warnock at (858) 204-8624.
