Alzheimer’s disease is one of the greatest medical challenges of our time; stealing memories, independence, and dignity. It is a relentless disease, not only impacting those diagnosed but also placing an immense emotional and financial burden on families and caregivers. But there is hope, fueled by groundbreaking research and the unwavering determination of scientists, advocates, and communities. Investing in Alzheimer’s research is not just important; it is essential. It is the key to unlocking a future where no one must endure the heartbreak of watching a loved one fade away.
Every breakthrough in Alzheimer’s research brings us closer to a world without this devastating disease. Researchers are tirelessly uncovering the causes, identifying risk factors, and developing treatments that could slow, stop, or even reverse cognitive decline. Recent advancements in early detection and innovative drug therapies offer promise, but we must push forward with even greater urgency. Time is precious, and every day without a cure means more lives affected, more families shattered.
Ending Alzheimer’s is not just a medical goal; it is a moral imperative. It is about preserving the stories, wisdom, and love that define us. It is about ensuring that future generations do not have to fear losing themselves or their loved ones to a disease that erases lifetimes of memories. We must continue funding research, supporting caregivers, and advocating for policies prioritizing Alzheimer’s treatment and prevention.
Join the Alzheimer’s Association San Diego/Imperial Chapter on May 2nd at the 2025 Brilliance Gala, where we will celebrate the progress being made and honor those leading the fight against Alzheimer’s. This year’s honorees include the Keck School of Medicine of USC Alzheimer’s Therapeutic Research Institute (USC ATRI), Dr. Rema Raman, and Maureen McNulty.
The 2025 Visionary Award will be presented to USC ATRI. USC ATRI is at the forefront of developing new treatments for Alzheimer’s, with cutting-edge clinical trials and reliable biomarkers for early detection – long before cognitive decline even begins. The 2025 Research Champion Award goes to Dr. Rema Raman, a Professor of Neurology at Keck School of Medicine. Dr. Raman’s innovative work is changing the course of Alzheimer’s research and helping clear the path for better treatments and care. The 2025 Hope Award will be presented to Maureen McNulty, a tireless San Diego advocate and champion. Maureen is the essence of the Alzheimer’s Association, having spent almost a decade on staff and another three decades as a volunteer. She lost her grandma and her mother to Alzheimer’s and is currently a caregiver for her sister.
Past Brilliance Gala honorees include Eisai, Jayne Slade, Best Buy Health, Karen Wilder, Dr. Michael Rafii, AMN Healthcare (Susan and Scott Salka), Belmont Village Senior Living (Patricia Will), Dr. David Crean, Dr. Jeffrey Cummings and Dr. Paul Aisen.
The fight against Alzheimer’s is not just for those currently affected; it is for all of us. It is for the grandparents who shared their wisdom, the parents who guided us, and the friends who made life’s journey meaningful. Together, we can and must end Alzheimer’s. Through research, resilience, and unwavering hope, we will one day celebrate a world where memories are never stolen and where Alzheimer’s is nothing more than a chapter in medical history.
The 2025 Brilliance Gala, locally supported by USC ATRI, Belmont Village Senior Living, and AMN Healthcare, is May 2nd at The Seabird Ocean Resort & Spa in Oceanside.
