“To whom much has been given, much is expected.”

The Arc of San Diego’s mission is to support and empower people with disabilities to achieve their life goals. The Arc of San Diego is the largest, most comprehensive provider of services to children and adults with disabilities and serves more than 2,000 individuals throughout San Diego County. Maria Rosa Stanley will Chair this year’s “Winter Wonderland Fashion Show & Luncheon” to benefit The Arc of San Diego.

#1 I have an adorable Golden doodle named Daffy.

#2 I was born on Friday the 13th and it has always been lucky for me.

#3 I grew up in the tight-knit Portuguese community of Point Loma here in San Diego and am a first generation American.

#4 I have to give credit to my mom who raised me with strength, determination and wisdom. I realize it so much more now that she is gone.

#5 I am a medieval history buff and would love to visit the Tower of London.

#6 I met a guy who I followed to Alaska and as I had hoped, he became my husband.

#7 I met Jennifer Navarra from The Arc of San Diego a few years ago through a mutual friend. I was so moved by the story she shared about the organization’s work and realized then that I needed to be involved with them.

#8 For more than 70 years, The Arc of San Diego has remained committed to supporting and empowering children and adults with disabilities to achieve their goals and reach their maximum potential. Through a wide range of programs, The Arc of San Diego offers support for individuals with disabilities and their families throughout every stage in life, from birth to seniors.

#9 The Arc of San Diego provides employment training and support to more than 400 individuals with disabilities throughout San Diego. One of these individuals is Ty Reynolds, who got a job as a busser at Sycuan Casino Resort’s Pink Buddha Restaurant. While Ty has only been there a few months, he has already shown he can handle additional responsibilities such as training newer staff members. Not only has Ty learned how to properly bus and set up tables, but he also assists guests with getting their to-go meals. Ty’s manager shared, “Ty’s work ethic is evident every day and he is incredibly responsible with his busser role. In addition, he is more than willing to step in to help guests and with any request from our team he is happy to oblige.”

#10 Winter Wonderland will assist in helping us fill the gap in funding we receive from the State of California and what it costs to operate our programs and services.

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
