10 Things About Andre Reed & the Andre Reed Foundation

Share

If you want something, you have to work for it. Give it your best and if it doesn’t work out at least you tried.

The Andre Reed Foundation was established in 2010 by retired NFL great Andre Reed to help underprivileged children reach their full potential and become responsible contributors to their communities. When Andre was a child, his mom never read to him because they did not have any books. Rather than being bitter, Andre was instead inspired to start a reading program for Boys and Girls Clubs called, “Read With Reed.” Andre is using the game of football and professional athletes to make reading cool for kids in all 50 states. Thanks to Andre, kids are getting books and reading at least 30 minutes a day.

Andre Reed

#1 I grew up in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

#2 I had a pet dog named Suede, she was a golden lab.

All smile

#3 I never thought that I would have such a successful career and make it into the Pro Football Hall of Fame when I came from such a tough life.

#4 My favorite travel destination has been Jerusalem, Israel. I got to go with Theresa, Robert Kraft and a bunch of other Hall of Famers.

Happy mood

#5 Do not underestimate your own abilities. If you are not doing the right things, it is hard to look yourself in the mirror every morning, but it is never too late to change your ways.

#6 I am actively attending church and pursuing my faith. I am in a zoom Bible study group with Pastor Miles McPherson and other athletes.

Boys and girls clubs

#7 At the top of my bucket list is to visit and inspire kids in a Boys and Girls Club in all 50 states. I have gone to 30 states so far.

Read With Reed

#8 Through our “Read With Reed” program, I go around the country speaking to kids about the power of reading and how it increases their educational success. We have a reading challenge where kids can earn a chance to go to an NFL/NBA game.

Boys and Girls Clubs

#9 We remodel reading rooms in Boys and Girls Clubs and make them super cool, cozy, safe places where kids can catch the love of reading and tackle a good book. One of the kids in our reading program hated reading but wanted to go to his local NFL team game. He won the challenge and really enjoyed reading in our remodeled reading area.

For a cause

#10 It is really cool to be a part of something that kids are using every day. In 10 or 20 years, I could go back to a Boys and Girls Club and see my reading rooms being used. But the reading rooms cost money so we are constantly raising funds and need help from the community to do so!

My love and appreciation for nonprofit work began in college when I was selected to represent UCLA’s undergraduate service organization. As a student, I didn’t have a lot of money to donate but I quickly learned that I could make an impact by giving my time. All you have to do to make a difference in someone’s life is care. For the last 30 years, San Diego has been my home. During this time, I have served on over 17 boards and chaired 27 fundraisers. No matter how much work I do with nonprofits, I am always amazed at the number of awesome causes and dedicated supporters out there. San Diego definitely has the best weather in the world but what makes San Diego America’s finest city are the people. I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to live in a city that has so many kind and selfless souls who genuinely care about making our community a better place for everyone. As Giving Back Magazine’s Philanthropy Editor, each week, I feature a hero and the causes that are creating a positive difference in our world. Always remember that philanthropy is about more than giving money, it’s about caring enough to help others who are in pain. So, go out there and make every moment count!
