With a new year ahead of us, we get very excited to start it off right. Many of us have a list of resolutions we would like to accomplish to make a positive change in our lives. I am not a fan of making resolutions because as we all know, for most of us, after a few weeks into whatever it was we promised ourselves, we start to lose motivation. Here is a list of changes you can make that are more achievable and can get you started on your heathiest year.

1. DO NOT DIET
Trying a new diet to lose weight will not work in the long-run. Changing your dietary habits and choosing to eat better foods as a way of life will not only help you feel better but can help you reach a healthy weight. Simplify your way of eating by adding more fruits and vegetables to your meals, try to avoid eating two hours before bedtime, and reduce your portions. Yes, you can have the cake but just a small slice, NOT the entire thing.

2. MOVE MORE
Cardio is always good, but lifting heavy weights can do wonders. If you are not into weight lighting maybe try walking, taking the stairs, or going for a hike. Just be sure to get moving every day.

3. POSITIVE THOUGHTS
It is tough to see the good in every situation but if we train our brains just like our bodies to react positively to whatever life throws at us, we will feel happier and deal with stress better. If you are feeling unhappy, try practicing this and you may soon start seeing life differently.

4. GIVE
When we give to others, we are also giving a gift to ourselves because it makes us happy. Even if it’s just a smile or a kind word, it can have a big impact on someone’s life. Research has proven that people that have an altruistic heart and a giving spirit live longer, happier lives.

5. WORRY LESS
One thing that works well is focusing on the solution to what you are worrying about instead of the problem. Realizing that there are things that are out of your control and letting go, instead of trying to change things, will give you a sense of freedom.

6. LAUGH MORE
It may be hard to do this at times, especially in a challenging situation, but if we are able to find humor in our lives it can be much more enjoyable.
