Father Joe’s Villages Annual Thanksgiving Tradition
Each year on Thanksgiving, Father Joe’s Villages holds their Thanksgiving Day 5K to raise funds and awareness for their programs feeding hungry neighbors in need. This iconic San Diego tradition aids homeless individuals in gaining back their independence through vocational training courses. By joining Father Joe’s Villages Annual Thanksgiving Day 5K, participants are not just helping feed people for a day, they are helping give them the skills to feed themselves for a lifetime.
In addition to a short walk or run through beautiful Balboa Park, this turkey trot also offers a variety of fun activities for the whole family, including live music, a beer garden, an optional pre-race Catholic Mass, pictures with Santa and more.
However, one of the most popular features of the event is the famous homemade pies that participants can bring home to their families each year.
Even better, the pies are prepared by and raise funds for Father Joe’s Villages Culinary Arts Program (CAP), a vocational training program preparing neighbors experiencing homelessness for a career in the culinary industry.
CAP gives students the tools they need to thrive in a competitive job market and gain confidence in their culinary skills. One program graduate, Alejandro, credits CAP with instilling in him a passion for cooking and for giving him a new direction for his future. After completing the 14-week culinary training program, Alejandro attained his dream job as a chef on a cruise ship. Next year, he will be cooking delicious meals on a ship traveling the world.
“Father Joe’s Villages changed my life by giving me an opportunity and support,” Alejandro shared with GB Magazine. “I think that’s what I needed most in my life – someone just to say ‘you can do it. Just stick to it.’ I don’t know of any other place that does what Father Joe’s does.”
On November 28, 2019, help support neighbors like Alejandro by joining Father Joe’s Villages for their 18th Annual Thanksgiving Day 5K. Walk or run through scenic Balboa Park with your family, friends and furry companions all while supporting Father Joe’s Villages mission to help those seeking self-sufficiency gain the skills they need for long-term employment. You will also help serve over one million meals each year to hungry neighbors in need. Plus, you can purchase a pie at checkout or at the event!
