For the last 18 years, Father Joe’s Villages’ Thanksgiving Day 5K has brought thousands of people together to raise critical funds that provide warm and nutritious daily meals to hungry San Diegans. Although the Turkey Trot will look differently this year, its mission remains the same: To alleviate hunger for people experiencing homelessness in San Diego.

Father Joe’s Villages’ Food Services program provides hundreds of meals each day to hungry people living on the streets and in shelters. These meals, served all 365 days of the year, provide more than just a basic means of survival. Access to nutritious meals can enable neighbors to focus less on hunger and more on building a brighter future. The funds raised through this event are crucial to making sure that Father Joe’s Villages is able to continue providing meals at a time when food insecurity in the community are at an all-time high due to COVID-19.
This year, participants can help provide life-saving meals by registering to complete the Thanksgiving Day “5K Your Way” challenge. Registrants can walk or run the distance and location of their choice, and fundraise to earn milestones. In whatever way they choose to participate, registrants will have a direct impact on alleviating hunger for those in need.
In addition to making this critical impact, the virtual Thanksgiving Day 5K will bring race favorites right to participants’ front doors. With each registration, participants receive the coveted yearly 5K shirt, a finisher’s medal, and their own bib number. Additionally, Father Joe’s Villages’ Culinary Arts Program will continue their annual tradition of preparing and selling their famous homemade pies, including Pumpkin Pie and Dutch Apple that will be available for pick-up right in time for Thanksgiving.
This year’s Thanksgiving weekend will be filled with special content and opportunities to win prizes and come together as a community. This will include a costume contest that is sure to get the whole family involved – and if the excitement and creativity from previous years is any indication, the competition will be fierce! Registrants can take part by showing off their Thanksgiving style on social media with the hashtag #FatherJoes5K. The winner will receive a prize package as well as four free registrations for next year’s Thanksgiving Day 5K.
Help Father Joe’s Villages continue to serve those in need, especially during these unprecedented times of uncertainty and food insecurity. Whether it is a walk with family, interacting online with the Father Joe’s Villages’ community, or cutting into a Culinary Arts Program pie, participants are guaranteed an unforgettably sweet Thanksgiving. During this season of giving and plenty, give back and make an impact on those most in need in our community.
