While the holidays are a time of celebration and abundance for many, other people in our community are not as fortunate. One in eight people face food insecurity, including one in six children. Teams for Good is an opportunity for corporations and community groups to unite against hunger by supporting Feeding San Diego through volunteerism and giving. Teams participate in a two-hour volunteer shift at Feeding San Diego, during which time they help glean, sort and pack food for the community. It is an experience that opens hearts and minds, while making a profound difference in the lives of those facing hunger.

Teams for Good can be incorporated into a company’s employee engagement and giving initiatives throughout the year. For the second year in a row, Swinerton Renewable Energy participated in Teams for Good as a part of their nationwide Fall Giving Challenge. “Even though we’re spread out across the country, it felt like we were all working toward something together,” said Jennifer Hershman, Community Relations Coordinator at Swinerton Renewable Energy. “We were all proud of doing this as a collective group. Every year Feeding San Diego and Teams for Good will be part of our Fall Giving Challenge – that’s a no-brainer.”

Teams for Good also allows corporate employees to develop a deeper bond as they join together to give back to their community. Compass San Diego participated through their Compass Cares program, where each real estate transaction triggers a corporate gift for donation to a meaningful cause. They also held fundraising events and an online virtual food drive to raise funds. With a team of over 600 employees, Compass San Diego helped provide 65,000 meals to San Diegans experiencing hunger. “Being able to provide a basic need of food to people right here in our community is very important,” says Maureen Tess-Fieberg, Compass Real Estate Agent. “We wanted to set up an opportunity for everyone here at Compass to get involved.”

After participating in the Teams for Good program last holiday season, USE Credit Union developed a continuing partnership with Feeding San Diego based on shared values. “Our vision is to transform lives by making dreams happen,” said Gloria Nunes, Assistant Vice President of Human Resources at USE Credit Union. “Dreams can be anything from buying a house, getting out of debt, or maybe knowing where your next meal is coming from.”

Last year, Feeding San Diego provided more than 26.3 million meals to those in need through a decentralized rescue and distribution network, including 300 distribution partners, 530 food donor locations, 225 farms and packing sheds, 14,000 volunteers, 8,500 donors and more than 50 staff. Every action counts!
