As they strive to make opera engaging and accessible to everyone, we at Southwest Airlines look forward to introducing students to opera for the first time. Noche de Ópera

San Diego Opera is proud to announce ¡Viva la Ópera!, an initiative founded by Board members and community leaders to engage the local Latino community and celebrate the diversity and culture of the San Diego / Baja California Communities.

Grown out of the success of the 2013 west coast premiere of the world’s first Mariachi Opera, Cruzar la Cara de la Luna; ¡Viva la Ópera! will build on the success of Cruzar and engage Latinos in social opera activities while simultaneously bringing awareness to San Diego Opera’s Education and Outreach School Programs that actively benefit large numbers of Latino youth throughout our community.

Although San Diego Opera has touched the lives of more than 3,000,000 students since the inception of its educational outreach programs in 1965, its significant impact is not well known throughout the community. Last season alone, the Opera’s educational outreach served 80,000 students, 62% of them from economically disadvantaged neighborhoods. This is a remarkable and laudable achievement; one that demonstrates the Company’s commitment to improving lives through the arts. In the face of public school budget cuts and the slow fade of arts programs, for many students the Opera’s programs are lifelines that nurture their innate need for creativity and beauty while producing demonstrated results in improving language skills and academic achievement. This is critically important for the personal development of tomorrow’s leaders, the wellness of our region, and our economy of innovation.

The first¡Viva la Ópera! event — Noche de Ópera, is planned for Saturday, April 5, 2014.

Co-Chaired by Southwest Airlines’ Lidia S. Martinez and Dr. Ted Martinez among others, Noche de Ópera promises a magical, emotional and moving evening at San Diego Opera for opening night of Don Quixote by Jules Massenet, immediately followed by the elegant cast party dinner at THE US GRANT. Starting at 5:00pm that same evening, there will be complimentary Latino arts performance on the San Diego Civic Concourse, featuring community groups Flamenco Arana, University of San Diego’s Folklorico and Mariachi Association, and Mariachi Garibaldi from Southwestern College.

The co-chairs are honored to co-chair Noche de Ópera for several reasons: first, San Diego Opera is having a profound impact on student success; especially in underserved communities; second, San Diego is the gateway to Mexico and is home to a growing Latino population – one that will play an important role in the future of our city; and third, San Diego Opera is ranked as one of the top five opera companies in the U.S., which further elevates San Diego’s status as a world class city with the finest programs in arts and culture.

Proceeds from sponsorships and ticket sales will be used to fund San Diego Opera’s ongoing education and outreach efforts, as well as to underwrite tickets for students to attend Don Quixote.
