Soroptimist Clubs Of North San Diego And Poway Empowering Women Transitioning Out Of Domestic Violence Shelters

Soroptimist International is a worldwide philanthropic organization of women whose mission of “Investing in Dreams” is accomplished through local club programs leading to social and economic empowerment for women and girls. In 1997, the Soroptimist Clubs of North San Diego and Poway teamed up to create a Domestic Violence Transitional Housing Program. This program for survivors of domestic violence moves families from dependency and abuse to a safe, self-sustaining life by providing housing, mentorship and financial help. Since the program began in 1997, 71 moms and 171 children have successfully graduated to live independent lives. The need now in our community is greater than ever.

Through the Live Your Dream Award program in 2020 the two clubs collectively distributed $24,000 to 16 women who provide the primary financial support for their families. These awards give women the resources they need to improve their education, skills, and employment prospects.

The Dream It, Be It program reaches girls in secondary school who face obstacles to their future success. They mentor girls on setting and achieving their goals, moving forward after setbacks or failures, and discovering career opportunities. “The program has given the girls the opportunity to open their minds and view their future differently. I experienced the change in them from day one to the end of the program,” shared America Briseno, ASES Meadowbrook Middle School.

The organization is very thankful for their sponsors who help maintain these programs to empower women, especially A Little Help Foundation Fund, as well as Billy Gene is Marketing, The Clinton Family Fund, Ameriprise Financial, Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, Box Appliance Service Co., Lee Proimos, Unicorn Jewelry, Victoria M. Jones, Hawthorne Cat, Friends of SI and Flanagan’s Landscape Company.

A Little Help Foundation Fund, Billy Gene is Marketing, The Clinton Family Fund, Ameriprise Financial, Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, Box Appliance Service Co., Lee Proimos, Unicorn Jewelry, Victoria M. Jones, Hawthorne Cat, Friends of SI and Flanagan’s Landscape Company.
