From Humble Beginnings to One of San Diego’s Largest and Most Well-Respect Nonprofit Community Health Providers

In 1969, a group of seven resilient mothers in the community of San Ysidro embarked on a journey to find accessible health care services for their children and families. In August of that year, San Ysidro Health was founded along the border in a small white house as a volunteer-driven clinic. At that time, health care services in the area were scarce and nearly unattainable. As the need for services increased, so did the organization and the care it offered.

More than half a century later, San Ysidro Health is the leading safety-net provider of essential primary health services in the San Diego region. With 47 program and clinic sites, it provides medical, dental, behavioral health and specialty care to nearly 108,000 patients of which 30 percent are children.

Today, San Ysidro Health stands on the shoulders of its founding mothers, staff and volunteers who have left a positive lasting impact in helping hard working families thrive. This is especially true in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. San Ysidro Health is a trusted health provider and intentionally hires staff at all levels from the communities it serves throughout San Diego County.

High Quality Care for All

The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately impacted the families San Ysidro Health serves in Central, South, East and Rural San Diego County. Data showed that infection rates were rampant in communities made up of essential workers that could not work from home and were employed in high-contact and high exposure jobs.

To keep up the fight against COVID-19 and its spread, San Ysidro Health provided more than 50,000 vaccines to patients in neighborhoods affected most by the pandemic. And they continue to lead vaccination efforts in under-resourced communities. Ninety percent of those vaccinated at San Ysidro Health are people of color. Their success is due to patients trusting their doctors and doctors calling patients by phone and encouraging them to come into the clinics to get vaccinated.
