Che Bella Vita.
In the south of Italy on the Sorrentine Peninsula, you will find a 30-mile stretch of cliff-lined, rocky shoreline. With its steep, cliff hugging villages and small beaches, the Amalfi Coast has to be lived in to be fully understood. We had heard stories of the beauty of the Amalfi coast but once we arrived we were surrounded by a picturesque landscape of mountains, sea and hillsides full of citrus groves and olives.
One-hour south of Naples, sits Sorrento where we stayed during our adventures. A quaint but busy town full of shops and great restaurants, it is the perfect doorway to the towns of Positano, Amalfi, Capri, and Ravello. The Bellevue Syrene, one of Sorrento’s well-known hotels, located in the heart of Sorrento with breathtaking views of the ocean makes for a perfect home base. Originally built as a patrician residence, this Relais & Chateaux Hotel, is a romantic refuge overlooking the Bay of Naples.
After a restful night, we ventured for the day to Positano, a cliffside village where there are no cars and can only be explored on foot. We felt as if we were transported into a postcard. The beauty, color and views are like none we had ever seen. After an exciting drive along the cliffs on a narrow winding highway, we ventured down the hill full of shops, restaurants, boutique hotels, churches and more.
Amalfi was the next town in our adventure. Below steep cliffs sits the largest town in the Amalfi Coast full of quaint shops, historical buildings and a port. We enjoyed the Italian tradition of gelato sitting in the plaza with a view of the charming Duomo di Sant’Andrea Apostolo.
The next stop on our trip was a small medieval village nestled in the hills above the coastline, Ravello. Surrounded by vineyards and lemon trees, source of the famous limoncello, a curiously strong lemon liqueur. Known as the hidden treasure of the Amalfi Coast, we wandered the medieval streets and ancient pathways of this charming village.
No visit to the region would be complete without a visit to Capri, the alluring island home to more shops and the famous and endlessly romantic Blue Grotto.
Enchantment, natural beauty and picturesque views surround you on the Amalfi Coast making it for a perfect ESCAPADITA.
