San Diego’s private, members-only club focuses on their philanthropic efforts.
When the University Club decided to rev-up theirphilanthropic engine, no one anticipated it would take off the way it did. At a time when San Diego’s members-onlysocial, dining and business club was on the verge of completing a 2.4million-dollar renovation and expansion, the philanthropic component was onearea they also wanted to be sure to include. As the preeminent club for business and social connections in San Diego,creating meaningful programs was a crucial component of their reinvention.
The University Club’s Giving Group was formed to facilitatemember and community involvement in non-profit organizations through awareness,contributions and volunteerism. TheGiving Group committee selects a different group that is featured each month attheir Charity and Wine event.
“Charity and Wine is not just a knowledge forum andreception; it is a unique fundraising opportunity,” Giving Group Chair BobAlden tells Giving Back Magazine. During the month leading up to Charity andWine, invited guests are extended an exclusive invitation to join in membershipat the University Club. When they join,the club donates the new member’s enrollment fee directly back to thenon-profit. Since January, the University Club has helped the organizationsthey have featured collectively raise nearly $10,000 by simply donating thejoining member’s enrollment fee back to the featured non-profit.
This month the University Club’s Giving Group invited JumaVentures. Bill Walton spoke to informmembers and guests about Juma’s efforts in the community. Juma is a unique organization that breaks thecycle of poverty by ensuring young people complete a four-year degree. They do this by employing low-income youth asvendors at QUALCOMM Stadium and PETCO Park. Juma then obtains bank accounts fortheir funds, teaches financial literacy and provides college services andmentoring. Over 97% of Juma Ventures’ Youth graduate high school, with 91%attending college.
With over 100 years of history as a by-invitation privateclub in San Diego, the University Club continues its excellence fosteringcamaraderie and community development in their majestic clubhouse atop theSymphony Towers downtown. The Clubexpands on its philanthropic efforts during July and August with their Summer of Giving.
