At Wells Fargo, we understand that living up to our mission in helping our customers succeed financially is important. Equally important is having our team members roll up their sleeves and give back to our communities.
This year thousands of Wells Fargo team members were encouraged to come together for the company’s first Dedicated Day of Service on September 20, to make a collective impact in the communities we serve. Team members spent their day volunteering in group events, on-site activities in breakrooms, or right from their desks through virtual volunteer opportunities.
In San Diego, team members volunteered their time with local organizations that are addressing the issues of sustainability, housing affordability and food insecurity within the region. More than 80 Wells Fargo Volunteers joined the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank and helped unpack and sort through 530 boxes of food and bag 7,000 pounds of apples. The Food Bank serves, on average, 350,000 people per month in San Diego County.
Meanwhile, more than 50 team members helped complete a beautification project with Father Joe’s Villages, which helps serve San Diegans experiencing homelessness and poverty. Father Joe’s Villages has grown to include a comprehensive campus and programs that house over 2,000 people nightly. A group of Wells Fargo team members also participated in I Love A Clean San Diego’s 35th annual coastal cleanup day with a team that helped collect 2,506 pounds of trash from the local San Luis Rey River Basin.
The Dedicated Day of Service was held during Wells Fargo’s Community Support Campaign, which occurs every September and encourages team members to give back – with their time and money – to causes they care about. In 2018, team members pledged $462,000 and contributed more than 17,400 hours volunteering with various causes throughout the year and during the Community Support Campaign. As a result, United Way Worldwide recognized Wells Fargo as the Number 1 in workplace giving for the 10th consecutive year.
Wells Fargo’s engagement in the San Diego region does not end with volunteering at local nonprofits. Wells Fargo team members are also committed to leveraging their financial skills for the betterment of our communities by participating in American Bankers Association annual events such as Teach Children to Save and Get Smart About Credit. Both campaigns teach significant financial skills, including the importance of saving, budgeting and money management. Our Wells Fargo bankers use Wells Fargo’s own financial literacy program Hands on Banking® to reach out to schools, community centers and nonprofit organizations to teach children as well as adults, about the critical importance of credit to one’s financial success and future.
