Spark The Wish Effect

Together, Make-A-Wish® San Diego and its community create life-affirming wishes for local children with critical illnesses. Wishes provide kids hope when they need it most, and research shows they have positive effects on children’s overall well-being and health outcomes. When a wish is granted, a child replaces fear with confidence, sadness with joy and anxiety with hope. In fact, a wish has been proven to provide physical and emotional benefits that can give children with critical illnesses a higher chance of survival.

Wishes like Alex’s backyard makeover, that gives him the motivation to work harder in physical therapy so he can enjoy his backyard with his friends. Or the moment Alecssa had her first-ever dance with her father, thanks to a special wheelchair provided as part of her quinceañerawish. And even wishes that sound simple in nature, can mean the world to a sick child in need of something to look forward to during their treatments.

Today there are more kids eligible for a wish in the local community than ever before. Make-A-Wish San Diego reports that 320 children are in their system that currently qualify for a wish, an increase of 16% in just one year!  The organization is on a quest to bring every eligible child’s wish to life in San Diego without delay, but the increase in projected wishes sparks a new sense of urgency for community support. Whether it’s serving as a volunteer, donor, or community ambassador…the organization needs your support to deliver the wish effect for every eligible child.

Make-A-Wish

San Diego President’s Circle.

Research suggests that as many as 317 children in the San Diego community will be diagnosed with a life-threatening illness this year, and Make-A-Wish San Diego is committed to making their wishes come true without delay. Currently, Make-A-Wish San Diego is reaching two-thirds of medically eligible children, but one in three eligible children in San Diego have not been granted a wish. To narrow this gap, Make-A-Wish San Diego has recently created an exclusive President’s Circle to assist in making EVERY wish come true for San Diego children.

San Diego philanthropists Hélène and George Gould have been extraordinary leaders in fundraising efforts for Make-A-Wish San Diego since 2010, and are the inaugural founders of the newly launched President’s Circle benefiting the organization. Hélène is also a founding member of the W.I.S.H Circle of Make-A-Wish San Diego, the dynamic women’s leadership group that supports its vision and mission. Hélène, who is originally from Southern France, is a fashion designer and real estate investor and George is a private investor.

Hélène and George founded the President’s Circle and pledged a $250,000 matching gift that will allow all gifts from new donors to have twice the impact on wishes for kids with life-threatening medical conditions. Donors who give $50,000 or more will join the Goulds in the exclusive President’s Circle to provide Make-A-Wish San Diego the ability to fulfill its mission of granting a wish for every child in San Diego County with a life-threatening medical condition to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Membership benefits include invitations to exclusive President’s Circle events, news and communications from the President’s Office, commemorative items emblematic of your membership, and the fulfillment that comes with knowing that you made an indelible impact on the life of a child.

“When Make-A-Wish San Diego told us about their goal to be able to reach each and every child in our great city, we were compelled to make a difference,” Hélène Gould tells Giving Back Magazine. “George and I have pledged to match every dollar up to $250,000 for this initiative. We encourage others to consider donating and joining the President’s Circle to help make an even greater impact in San Diego, so that ALL of our local kids can have their wishes come true.”

“Nearly every day in San Diego, a child is diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition,” said Chris Sichel, President and CEO, Make-A-Wish San Diego. “Hélène and George have been instrumental in launching the President’s Circle, and their extraordinary donation and the joy it will inspire for our Wish Kids will shape Make-A-Wish San Diego’s future for years to come.”

Members of the President’s Circle will make it possible for our local Make-A-Wish to grant a wish for every child in San Diego. For more information on the President’s Circle and how you can be a hero for a Wish Kid, contact Dana Vandersip: dvandersip@wishsandiego.org.

Your membership in the President’s Circle ensures that all Wish Kids — like Areice –get the chance to have their wishes come true.
