The Campaign for Barrio Logan College Institute has kicked off with a lead gift of $500,000 from The Stiefel Behner Charitable Fund. Keith Behner, BLCI’s Board Chair, and his wife Cathy Stiefel made the pledge in 2019 to ensure BLCI stays in the Barrio Logan community. With the rising cost of real estate, BLCI was not sure they would be able to stay in the neighborhood, raising concerns with the families they serve as the majority of them live in Barrio Logan.

BLCI’s mission is to break the cycle of poverty by preparing underserved students to be the first in their families to go to college through afterschool programs that begin in third grade. BLCI provides afterschool workshops, specialized tutoring sessions, field trips and introductions to career pathways, resulting in 100% of their students going to college. “BLCI successfully intervenes to break the cycle of poverty and the lack of opportunity has historically impeded opportunity and success of underserved communities. We have a system, program, and formula that works,” Behner proudly shared with GB Magazine.

After reading an article about BLCI 10 years ago, Keith and Cathy knew they had to be involved with this amazing non-profit. In addition to Keith serving as the board chair and the couple serving as honorary co-chairs for BLCI’s annual gala, Opportunity for Impact, the two have been the lead donors for BLCI program needs through their charitable fund. Through their generosity as well as others, BLCI will be able to remain in the community that needs them the most.
