Celebrating 16 Years of First-Generation High School and College Graduates

Many families and their children are facing some of the most difficult challenges of their lives in one of the most turbulent chapters of the last century. Fortunately, for many families in San Diego, Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI) has been an island of calm and normalcy that continues to help families and students in disadvantaged neighborhoods persevere and stay on track toward their goal of college admission and graduation.
On June 27, BLCI held its 16th annual graduation celebration with 44 new BLCI high school graduates and 15 new BLCI college graduates. This achievement is the result of the hard work of the students and parents that BLCI serves, the dedication of an amazing team of caring staff that faithfully implements BLCI’s proven model, and the support of stalwart donors who recognize the effectiveness of the BLCI model and who continue to invest in it as an engine of positive generational change.
Each year, BLCI adds more high school and college graduates to its list of alumni who are the first in their families to be admitted to college and to earn a college degree. Each BLCI graduate is testament to a model that breaks the cycle of poverty by preparing underserved students to be first-generation college students and graduates. The BLCI model begins in the 3rd grade and provides students with support through elementary, middle, high school, and ultimately, college. BLCI also provides support to parents as first-time navigators of their children’s path to college. BLCI creates a college-bound culture among families who are empowered by their children’s educational achievement.
This Fall, BLCI’s graduates will be attending San Diego State University, the University of San Diego, and University of California campuses at San Diego, Riverside, Berkeley, and Santa Cruz. This year’s BLCI college alumni earned degrees from the University of California San Diego, the University of California Los Angeles, and the University of Southern California.

Muchas familias y sus hijos están enfrentando uno de los desafíos más complejos de sus vidas en uno de los periodos más turbulentos el último siglo. Afortunadamente para muchas familias de San Diego, el Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI) ha sido un oasis de calma y normalidad que sigue ayudando a las familias y estudiantes de los barrios más necesitados a mantenerse firmes en su objetivo de lograr el ingreso a la universidad y la graduación de la misma.
El 27 de junio BLCI llevó a cabo su celebración anual de graduación con 44 nuevos graduados de BLCI del secundario y 15 de la universidad. Este logro es el resultado de un duro trabajo por parte de los estudiantes y padres a los que asiste BLCI, junto a la dedicación y el compromiso del increíble personal, que de manera fiel implementan el modelo exitoso de BLCI, apoyado por un grupo de sólidos donantes que reconocen la efectividad del modelo BLCI y continúan invirtiendo en él cómo motor de un cambio positivo generacional.
Cada año, BLCI suma más graduados de secundaria y de universidad a su listado de exalumnos, quienes fueron los primeros de su familia en ser admitidos en la universidad y obtener un título universitario. Cada graduado de BLCI es un testimonio de cómo este modelo puede romper con el ciclo de la pobreza mediante la preparación de los estudiantes necesitados, logrando que éstos sean los primeros graduados de la secundaria y de la universidad en sus familias. El modelo de BLCI comienza con acompañamiento en el tercer grado, ofreciendo a los alumnos apoyo durante la primaria, escuela media, secundaria y la universidad. BLCI también apoya a los padres para que puedan acompañar a sus hijos a recorrer este camino hacia la universidad. BLCI crea una cultura de compromiso universitario entre las familias que se sienten empoderadas por los logros educativos de sus hijos.
Este otoño, los graduados de BLCI estarán cursando en San Diego State University, University of San Diego y University of California en los campus de San Diego, Riverside, Berkeley y Santa Cruz. Los ex alumnos de BLCI de este año son graduados de la University of California de San Diego, University of California de Los Ángeles y University of Southern California.
