That they all may be one
As the world reacts to the unprecedented COVID-19 virus, OLP was blessed with a community gathering before being forced to say goodbye to their physical campus for a period of time. Not knowing what was to lie ahead, this special interfaith gathering brought together Bishop John Dolan, Rabbi Jeremy Gimbel, Butterfly Project Founder, Cheryl Rattner Price and Holocaust survivor, Susie Katz. This celebration of unifying love became an event that would hallmark the mission of the founding Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet (CSJ) from the gospel scriptures “that they all may be one.”
This event served as a dedication ceremony for both The Butterfly Project installation and a Vatican-approved, exact casting of Michelangelo’s Pietà. This world-renowned masterpiece depicts the Virgin Mary holding the body of Christ after he has been removed from the cross. In the late 1930s, in fear of the Nazis destroying priceless works of art, the Vatican commissioned molds of sacred statues and OLP is blessed to now have one on their campus.
At OLP, it serves as a testament to the enduring acts of courage and bravery of Catholic upstanders during the Holocaust, and in particular the school’s founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, during World War II. In the face of injustice, the Sisters of St. Joseph took an active role in courageously standing up to protect others, hiding children and adults in their convents, moving them to freedom, often at their own peril.
Through the generosity of OLP benefactors, including the Mogollon Coppel Family and the Boulanger Family, OLP has been gifted a replica of Michelangelo’s Pietà, and restored a historic place on campus in honor of Parents in Prayer founder, board member and alumna parent, Martha McRoskey, so naming it, the Martha McRoskey Place of Peace.
The official installation of The Butterfly Project, which was founded at the San Diego Jewish Academy, shares space with the Pieta. OLP students have been participating in The Butterfly Project through the academic course “Examining the Holocaust Through Literature.” This artistic and educational project memorializes the 1.5 million children who perished in the Holocaust and honors the survivors with each butterfly.
The Pietà and The Butterfly Project are joined together in the Martha McRoskey Place of Peace, which serves as an interfaith sacred space in honor of the work of the school’s founders, their charism of “unifying love,” and mission “that they all may be one,” which is very alive today in thought and action.
This is the first of several intentional faith installations throughout campus as part of their Boundless Campaign renovation. Although the project will see a 30,000-square-foot renovation of the historical buildings incorporating ADA accessibility, new classrooms and a state of the art science and innovation lab, central to everything is the story of their CSJ charism and their mission.

Mientras el mundo reacciona al sin precedente virus COVID-19, OLP tuvo la bendición de una reunión comunitaria justo antes de tener que decir adiós a su campus físico hasta que mejoren las condiciones. Sin saber lo que el futuro deparaba, esta reunión ecuménica reunió al obispo John Dolan, al rabino Jeremy Gimbel, a la fundadora del proyecto Butterfly Cheryl Rattner Price y a la sobreviviente del Holocausto, Susie Katz.
