Heart AND Soul

Dr. Robert Rubenstein and Ms. Marie Raftery have been generous supporters of Jewish Family Service (JFS) for many years. They have been supporting the Heart & Soul Gala since 2007 and inspire others with their compassionate philanthropy. Concerned that families faced a difficult time in paying for higher education, Dr. Rubenstein established the Rubenstein Family Scholarship for high school graduates of the Jewish community who were planning to attend college or vocational school. The program, now named the David Rubenstein Memorial Scholarship Fund after Dr. Rubenstein’s son, has awarded more than 73 scholarships since its inception. In 2011, Dr. Rubenstein was an honoree at the Heart & Soul Gala for the impact of this program.

In addition to the gala and scholarship program, Dr. Robert Rubenstein and Ms. Marie Raftery have been JFS Friends of the Family since 1999. Friends of the Family are the most dedicated donors to the JFS’s annual campaign. Their support enables JFS to provide critical care, help and healing to the lives of the thousands of people who turn to JFS every year. JFS is committed to alleviating hunger, supporting those in crisis, assisting the elderly to age with dignity and respect and strengthening families. Michael Hopkins, CEO of JFS, tells Giving Back Magazine, “Marie and Bob are so much more than good supporters. They are a couple that leads with their heart. They are not afraid to roll up their sleeves, tackle tough issues and stick with it. Most importantly, they are messengers of joy and gratitude.”

We are all thankful to Marie and Bob for supporting the goal of a higher education for some of the brightest young minds in our community and for making our city a better place to live for all.

Jewish Family Service’s Heart & Soul Gala takes place March 15, 2014 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla. For more information about the David Rubenstein Memorial Scholarship Fund, Heart & Soul Gala or JFS Friends of the Family, please visit
