Responding to the Needs of Our Time

Learning Continues Despite School Closure
Due to COVID-19, the Academy of Our Lady of Peace (OLP) closed their physical campus on March 13, however, this does not mean that learning and operations halted. Because of early planning and preparation, the school was able to seamlessly transition all 750 students and over 80 faculty and staff members to virtual learning and work.
For 138 years, OLP has withstood the test of time. OLP has endured through World War I, the Great Depression, the Spanish Flu that swept the United States, World War II, and so much more. Through it all, OLP has continued to iterate, change its approach, and at its core, maintain the charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, and a devotion to serving the “dear neighbor without distinction.” OLP has once again had to respond by ensuring their girls are cared for academically, socially and spiritually.
Using video conferencing tools, live synchronous classes have continued, and learning has been uninterrupted. They have even been able to host virtual all-school assemblies with more than 800 participants every morning. This amazing response is possible due to having moved the school to fully cloud- and web-based tools years ago.
In addition to providing live virtual learning, parent-teacher conferences were hosted virtually. “Even in this virtual capacity, OLP’s community continues to thrive!” Dr. Lauren Lek, Head of School at OLP shared with GB Magazine. “Clubs continue to host guest speakers, students complete service projects, and the Class of 2020 recently enjoyed a Virtual Prom with a special performance by The Voice singer, Wé McDonald.”
As the school looks to the future and the Fall of 2020, their phenomenal team of educators is working to imagine what that might be. Rest assured that classes will resume on schedule on August 17, 2020!

El aprendizaje continúa a pesar de estar cerradas las escuelas
Debido al COVID-19, Academy Our Lady of Peace (OLP) cerró físicamente su campus el 13 de marzo, pero esto no quiere decir que el aprendizaje y las operatorias se detuvieron. Gracias a planeamientos y preparativos hechos con tiempo, la escuela pudo realizar la impecable transición a la enseñanza y al trabajo virtual de sus 750 alumnas y más sus 80 docentes.
Por más de 138 años OLP ha desafiado el paso del tiempo y conflictos como la Primera Guerra Mundial, la Gran Depresión, la gripe española que arrasó en los Estados Unidos, la Segunda Guerra Mundial y mucho más. Durante estos períodos de prueba OLP continuó recalcando, adaptando, pero en esencia, manteniendo el carisma de las Hermanas de San José de Carondolet y su devoción por servir al “prójimo sin distinción”. OLP nuevamente tuvo que responder en esta crisis asegurando que sus niñas continuaran recibiendo atención académica, social y espiritual.
Utilizando herramientas como las conferencias de video, las clases en vivo sincronizadas, se continuó sin interrupciones el proceso de aprendizaje. Inclusive llevan a cabo las reuniones matinales de toda la escuela de manera virtual donde hay más de 800 participantes. La increíble respuesta en parte se debe al traslado a un sistema basado en la nube y las redes que realizó ya hace años la escuela.
No solo el aprendizaje es virtual, sino también las reuniones de padres se realizan virtualmente. “Inclusive en este modo virtual la comunidad de OLP sigue prosperando” le comenta a Giving Back la directora de OLP, la Dra. Lauren Lek. “Los clubes continúan teniendo oradores invitados, las estudiantes completan sus proyectos de servicio y la clase 2020 recientemente disfrutó de un Virtual Prom con la presentación especial del participante de The Voice, Wé McDonald.
Mientras que la escuela sigue enfocada en el futuro y el otoño 2020, el increíble equipo de educadores está trabajando para pensar en los que esto pueda significar. ¡Tengan la seguridad de que reiniciaremos las clases como planeado el 17 de agosto de 2020!
