Transforming lives since 1981.

Toward Maximum Independence (TMI) Executive Director Rachel Harris has dedicated the past 27 years to serving children and adults with developmental disabilities. Harris first joined TMI in 2004 and went on to become the ED in 2013. Under her leadership, TMI has quickly become one of the most innovative, cutting-edge, and progressive organizations providing assistance to people with disabilities such as autism, cerebral palsy or Down syndrome. Harris is a passionate leader who helps to ensure that TMI staff provide their clients with meaningful employment, community living supports and loving foster families or in-home supports to children.

“Our services help to significantly increase the success of our clients to reach their full potential in life,” Harris tells Giving Back Magazine. Harris credits her faith for giving her the passion and purpose to truly make a difference in the lives of those who need it the most.

Harris forms part of the team at TMI, and along with the Board of Directors and Executive Team, they play a vital role in helping to set TMI’s course into the future in a productive and progressive direction. Each member’s voice is valued and relied upon to help TMI make a lasting impact on the lives of children and adults with developmental disabilities, as well as the deaf and hard of hearing. TMI recently appointed Bryan Shull, who is the VP/Branch Manager at Silvergate Bank in La Mesa, as their Board Chair. Shull, TMI’s full Board and more than 300 staff are committed to giving back to our most vulnerable citizens. They take great pride in helping the agency serve more than 700 clients throughout San Diego, Riverside and Imperial Counties.
