In 1973, a team of volunteer healthcare professionals took it upon themselves to meet the growing needs for culturally competent healthcare in San Diego’s Latino, Filipino, and other underserved communities.   Operation Samahan (Samahan means “working together” in Filipino) has grown from seeing people in a barbershop in downtown San Diego to seven sites providing an array of healthcare services, from primary care to behavioral health, nutrition classes to dental care. Operations Samahan provides affordable integrative services including acupuncture and non-medication alternatives to managing stress and staying well. We have a part time senior center, as well as operate the Youth2Youth Center on our National City campus directly across from Sweetwater High. We serve over 20,000 patients annually with main sites in National City and Mira Mesa.

Operation Samahan strives to be a “patient-centered medical home” for individuals and families throughout San Diego and beyond.  The principles behind a medical home include the following:

1) Comprehensive Care – Our team of providers consists not just of doctors and nurses, but also health educators, and other care coordinators to ensure a large majority of each patient’s physical and mental health care needs, including prevention and wellness, acute care, and chronic care are met.

2) Patient-Centered – Our approach is to provide relationship-based primary health care for the whole person, working with the patient, their families, and taking into account each patient’s unique needs, culture, values, and preferences.

3) Coordinated Care –Operation Samahan coordinates your health care across all elements of the broader health care system, including specialty care, hospitals, and other community services and supports.  We provide oral health, behavioral health, and integrative health services in addition to primary care, and will help refer to other programs and services people may need if we do not already provide them.

4) Accessible Services – At Operation Samahan we strive to offer accessible services with shorter waiting times for urgent needs and can provide alternative ways of communication such as email and telephone, always being responsive to a patient’s preferences regarding access.

5) Quality and Safety – Operation Samahan is committed to quality improvement by ongoing engagement in evidence-based medicine and clinical decision-support tools to ensure people receive the best quality care possible.  We want to make sure that we work with patients and families and respond appropriately to patient experiences and satisfaction.
