Tijuana se ha convertido en una ciudad importante en el mundo del deporte. Cuenta con un equipo campeón de futbol, y ahora la región fronteriza suma dos equipos importantes, el equipo de béisbol Toros de Tijuana y el de baloncesto Tijuana Zonkeys que están sumando seguidores por todos lados. Dos grandes lÃderes femeninas están trabajando para crear conciencia sobre el sentido de pertenencia comunitaria y mejorar el entorno familiar a través de estos grandes equipos. Blanca Uribe en los Toros y Claudia Carrillo en los Zonkeys están al mando de importantes proyectos y compartieron con Giving Back experiencias personales y sus esfuerzos por crear dos grandes equipos en Tijuana.
GB: ¿Qué tareas llevan a cabo dentro de los equipos?
Blanca Uribe: Me esfuerzo por hacer de los Toros un club deportivo que participa activamente dentro de nuestra comunidad; planeo y ejecuto varios tipos de eventos y establezco fuertes relaciones dentro de la región. También apoyo y promuevo el deporte entre jóvenes de ambos lados de la frontera.
Claudia Carrillo: ¡Es un trabajo soñado, donde combino dos de mis grandes pasiones; deportes y diseño! Aunque utilizo gran parte del tiempo en las relaciones públicas, amo estar involucrada en todos los detalles. Empecé por rediseñar toda la imagen y concepto del equipo, desde logotipos a uniformes, inclusive los artÃculos que se venden en nuestras tiendas.
GB: What are the goals you have for your teams?
CC: I am always looking for ways to bring our community together. One of our goals with the Zonkeys is to instill this passion in our youth through leadership in sports and teamwork. Being part of the team has been a stepping-stone in bringing families not only to have fun, but also to be part of sports culture rapidly growing in our city. Our biggest goal is to become a winning team and we have had an amazing season!
BU: My goals for Toros are aligned with the goals of the club. We are focused on becoming the number one brand in baseball in Mexico in a comprehensive way. We are in our first year but we want our fans to feel proud to be part of Toros; to know they are part of something different and truly special.
GB: ¿Cómo han influido en ustedes sus experiencias de vida para llegar a ser las lÃderes que son hoy en dÃa?
BU: Me considero muy joven, especialmente en el mundo deportivo donde hay tantos jugadores importantes y legendarios. Aun asÃ, amo estudiar y creo que la suerte existe cuando se conjugan preparación y oportunidad. Sueño en grande pero tengo mis pies firmemente plantados en la tierra. Admiro a esas personas que han logrado mucho pero nunca pierden el norte en cuanto a los aspectos más importantes de la vida, como familia y el valor de cada individuo.
CC: La mayor emoción la encuentro en aceptar retos y en superar mis propias expectativas, por eso busco aprovechar esos momentos, hay muchas oportunidades y recursos disponibles. Teniendo esta posición de liderazgo en los Zonkeys puedo impactar en forma positiva en las personas a mà alrededor – mis compañeros, organizaciones y la comunidad en general. Este es un papel que valoro enormemente y me ha llevado a ser la persona que hoy soy.
GB: How do you maintain your work and personal life balanced?
CC: I say, “Go for it!” Go and give it your all and make your mark on that field! My own experience is that the sports world embraces women. It is important to feel confident, speak-up, and embrace your talents with any job and always have the right attitude above everything! My peers, both male and female, have treated me with respect and kindness. I am lucky in that regard, all the people I work with are intelligent, fun and supportive. I believe that a woman working in sports is a thrilling journey!
GB: What advice would you give women who would like to work in sports?
BU: Sports reveal elements about being a part of a team, the importance of working together to accomplish a common goal. We learn shared accountability and how to manage defeat and failure. In sports, we can experience how remaining dedicated for a period of time can result in great achievements. We learn consistency and focus, how to overcome weaknesses and go beyond our limits. I would recommend stay consistent and committed. I believe there is huge potential for opportunities for women in the sports world.
