Media Arts Center San Diego (MACSD) evolved out of the San Diego Latino Film Festival, which originated in 1993. Incorporated in 1999, MACSD has grown from a festival to a mid-size organization with diverse statewide programs and services for residents, visitors and independent and amateur filmmakers.

In 2012, MACSD moved into a new space in North Park. Renovating a derelict building, now known as the Digital Gym, bringing vitality and inspiring new businesses to open in this once-blighted area. The Digital Gym allowed MACSD to expand core programming to better serve the community. Recently, Media Arts Center San Diego, in partnership with The Age Friendly Communities initiative, AARP and the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency, Aging & Independence Services, announced a new Emerging Filmmaker Fellowship. This four-month fellowship will provide participants with cash stipends and mentorship to produce their own short films highlighting the importance of ongoing local efforts to build age-friendly communities where people of all ages can be healthy and thrive. Upon completion, the short documentaries will be screened at an Age-Friendly Film Festival in November 2021. Application deadline must enter their application by May 1st.

Aging & Independence Services provide education and linkages to the various age-friendly efforts by the County and other local municipalities. This fellowship and culminating film festival is made possible by a generous grant from The San Diego Foundation.
