“Do what you love to do and you will never work a day in your life.”
Since 1961, Home of Guiding Hands has provided programming and housing for men, women and children with developmental disabilities. HGH is much more than caregivers; they are partners, facilitators, community members and teachers. HGH believes that individuals thrive when they can direct their own lives in a setting that offers a more fulfilling lifestyle with individualized attention, and opportunities for self-sufficiency as well as community integration and access.
The money raised at the Randy Jones Run, Walk & Roll will help HGH President, Mark Klaus maximize the independence, productivity and quality of life for the individuals at HGH.
10 Things About Mark Klaus & Home of Guiding Hands
#1 As a child, we moved every 2 – 3 years or so and lived in California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Ohio and New York.
#2 I have two brothers. My youngest lives in Long Beach and my oldest now lives in Washington DC after serving in the Air Force for 30 years. My wife and I have two daughters and one grandson.
#3 My first job was as a dishwasher in a restaurant when I was 14.
#4 I love the casual vibe at Mitch’s Seafood in Point Loma and there really isn’t a better view.
#5 My favorite book is “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”. Memories of reading it to my kids still makes me smile.
#6 We always have had dogs in our house. My wife and I now have a Poochon named Tucker. He is a Bichon – Poodle mix.
#7 I have had the honor and the privilege of meeting 5 US Presidents.
#8 I started volunteering for a couple of non-profits while I was in high school and have always believed that we all have something of value that we can contribute. We can all make a positive impact by giving back.
#9 Phil has been living with us at HGH for many years and is now 82 years old. Every time I see Phil, he has a smile on his face and he says to me “Life is good Mark”. I always smile back and say “Yes, it is Phil”. He reminds me that no matter how challenging a day may be, life is still very, very good.
#10 Home of Guiding Hands just celebrated its 51st Anniversary! With over 800 employees and 31 residential homes, we were fortunate to move into a 25,000 square foot Resource Center in El Cajon. My door is always open. Please come visit us!
