After experiencing Hurricane Dorian, the most intense tropical cyclone on record, the Abacos and Grand Bahamas Islands, both part of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, are faced with horrific loss of life, thousands of missing people and unimaginable destruction. The islands have seen billions of dollars in damage, including an oil spill of over 1.5 million gallons. The aftermath of the Category 5 hurricane has been nothing short of devastating.
However, in these dark times, people around the world are pooling their resources and reaching out to help in any way they can. A mere 50 miles off the coast of Florida, this disaster is close to home and our hearts. In our community, Papa Doug Manchester and the Manchester Charitable Foundation are supporting the recovery efforts in the Bahamas. Papa Doug Manchester shared with GB Magazine, “We cannot afford to let the Bahamas collapse. We must help them rebuild”. He is dedicated to doing everything he can to be a leader in this time of tragedy. “We are sending our thoughts and prayers to all of the families who have been affected. The Bahamians are strong and resilient, and we pledge to stand with them as they persevere through this catastrophe.”
Nominated by President Donald J. Trump to serve as Ambassador to the Bahamas, Papa Doug Manchester recently made a trip to the islands to help provide aid. During his time, he visited with children at shelters and delivered 2,000 pounds of food, medical supplies and emergency goods. Although it has now been nearly two months, Bahamians are still in grave need of support. Manchester has agreed to match every dollar donated up to $1 million to help the Bahamas and 100% of the proceeds will go toward the greatest needs. The Manchester Charitable Foundation has already received personal donations ranging from $5 to $100,000 from generous donors across the United States. Throughout the last four decades, the Manchester Charitable Foundation and the Manchester Family have been leaders in helping communities around the world, donating over $70 million to date, with a focus on children, health and human services and education.
