Celebrating 25 years of Building Vibrant Communities
On a warm summer day in 1994, local community leaders gathered to celebrate the grand opening of MAAC’s first affordable housing community: Mercado Apartments. It was also the first new development for Barrio Logan in nearly fifty years and provided 144 much needed homes for San Diego families. Since then, MAAC has developed more than 1,000 units of housing throughout the county.
This year, MAAC is celebrating 25 years of providing housing and its continued commitment to providing safe and affordable homes to families in San Diego. With a pipeline of real estate development projects in the works, MAAC is making plans to double the number of affordable units in the agency’s portfolio over the next five years. Ventana al Sur is just one of the projects being planned and will provide 101 affordable one- and two-bedroom units for seniors in San Ysidro.
“I’m retired and on a fixed income. If it wasn’t for MAAC, I would have been out on the street,” shared Joyce Roberts, a former resident of one of MAAC’s housing communities. Roberts is just one of thousands of individuals whose lives have been changed because MAAC provided them with a safe, stable place to call home.
MAAC President & CEO Arnulfo Manriquez shared with GB Magazine, “I am excited to share that MAAC will be bringing more housing to San Diego in the next few years, with the kind of hard work and collaboration that has made us successful for the past two and a half decades. We are not only creating affordable housing for working families around us, MAAC is building vibrant communities!”
In addition to Housing, MAAC provides resources and services in the areas of Economic Development, Education, Health & Wellbeing, as well as Advocacy & Leadership Development. MAAC has been a champion for underrepresented communities throughout San Diego County since 1965.
