Excellence in Education.
Empowering and advancing women in the workplace, community and world is an underlying theme within the practice and educational focus of Lauren Lek, Ed.D., Head of School at the Academy of Our Lady of Peace (OLP). For the past three years, Dr. Lek has been a tremendous supporter of the STEAM academic initiative, which recognizes the academic disciplines of science, technology, and math as equally important as engineering and the arts. This past year, the graduating class saw 30 percent of its graduates pursuing STEM majors in college, which is double the co-ed national average.
Dr. Lek is a lifelong learner who seeks opportunities to connect her staff and larger professional network with the most current research and best strategies for teaching and learning, always working to move OLP, a 134-year-old San Diego institution, forward. This endeavor ensures OLP is able to offer the best in academics and remain the hub for educating the next generation of women leaders and innovators.
Dr. Lek has also sought to create at the school, as the only all girls’ school in San Diego, a nucleus for prominent women leaders to network, collaborate and inspire the next generation through the OLP Women’s Symposium. The event, forthcoming in March 2017, pulls together extraordinary women leaders in San Diego and beyond. Dr. Lek seizes every opportunity to explore and support programs and initiatives which highlight non-traditional career paths for women.
Additionally, Dr. Lek models the very thing she works with the students to achieve: excellence rooted in service to the community. As a member of the Downtown San Diego Rotary, Dr. Lek regularly works with other businesses and professional leaders to help build goodwill and peace through philanthropic activities. Dr. Lek has served as the co-chair of the Rotary STEM committee that serves the City Heights Hoover High School cluster of Elementary and Middle Schools.
