Sparking Your Imagination.

Javier Velasco, Artistic Director for the San Diego Ballet, is known for his unique collaborations and exciting choreography and he shared with us his excitement for the 2016-17 season.

“This is an exciting time at the San Diego Ballet because the new ballets we are adding to our primary programing will spark our patrons’ imaginations, stretch our dancers as artists… and delight and challenge me as the artistic director of the company!” Javier proudly tells Giving Back Magazine.

This season brings a re-staging of San Diego Ballet’s FIREBIRD. This production is in collaboration with Culture Shock San Diego and is a “ballet-meets-Hip-Hop” favorite. RITMOS LATINOS will be an ongoing series that will showcase different Latin musical styles including MAMBOMANIA, that will set ballet pieces set to mariachi music. This year’s program will also feature the premiere of Aaron Copland’s THREE LATIN AMERICAN SKETCHES.

Some of San Diego Ballet’s most successful pieces have been works set to jazz music, so their EVENING OF JAZZ AND DANCE will now be an annual series. They are also excited to bring back jazz saxophone great, Charles McPherson, to perform his SWEET SYNERGY SUITE, on a program that will also feature last year’s popular TIME FURTHER OUT, set to the music of Dave Brubeck.

“All in all, the season is promising to be one that really allows us to fulfill our mission… to excite, enlighten and entertain our diverse audience through an imaginative presentation of quality classical and contemporary dance. We hope you will join us… and if you do, please come up and say “Hi,” to me and any of our company dancers. We look forward to meeting you”
