So many of this year’s events have been canceled, which may leave you wondering what there is to do on 4th of July. Fortunately, there are still plenty of ways to celebrate with your family. Here are some ideas for how to spend your Independence Day this year:

1. Watch the fireworks at a social distance. If your 4th of July is incomplete without a grand firework spectacle, you will want to find somewhere to go watch them with the family. Some cities, like Poway and El Cajon, have decided to host firework celebrations, with new safety stipulations in place. Plan ahead with family and friends to set up a space to watch where you can enjoy them together.

2. Tune into the Big Bay Boom Fourth of July TV Special. From 8 to 9:30 pm, you can watch highlights of Big Bay Boom fireworks from past years as well as other special festive content on Fox 5 or KTLA 5. This is perfect for those who are avoiding crowds and want to keep their firework celebration indoors this year. While it might not be the same as seeing them in-person, it is the next best thing.

3. Spend the day out on the bay. Rent a sailboat or yacht and take the family out on the water for a memorable 4th of July. With a boat to yourselves, you can host your own Independence Day party featuring your favorite foods, beverages, and games, while basking in the beautiful San Diego sun. And who knows, you may even see some sea life while you are out there.

4. Throw your own Independence Day BBQ. Rent a house on the beach with your family to have your very own beachside 4th of July celebration. Throw some burgers and hot dogs on the grill, play games on the sand, and cook some mores over the home’s fire pit. Nothing compliments a BBQ better than a nice breeze, enjoying a meal on the sunbathed deck, and watching the sunset on beautiful waves.

5. Make it an unconventional 4th of July in Julian. While many of the festivities are cancelled, the mountain town is still going all-out with their décor in honor of the occasion. Rent a cabin for your family so you can enjoy the crisp mountain air, take in the beautiful sights of the Cleveland National Forest, and make memories beneath the stars with a bonfire featuring American classics; you might even start a family tradition.

While 4th of July 2020 might be different, it will still be a star spangled spectacular.
