San Diego’s Jewish Community.

On March 12, 2017, the San Diego History Center in Balboa Park will debut its marquee exhibition for the year titled Celebrate San Diego! The History & Heritage of San Diego’s Jewish Community. The exhibit provides a beautiful and vital narrative of the Jewish experience in our region told through historically-significant and eye-catching artifacts, oral history kiosks, and an interactive general store.

San Diego’s Jewish pioneers were essentially double immigrants – having come largely to the eastern United States from locations throughout the world, uprooting themselves yet again to immigrate to California when opportunity called. In San Diego, they arrived with statehood in 1850, when it was a small town of only 500 residents. Jews made up a small percentage of that population but contributed a disproportionately large amount of time, effort, talent, and resources to develop the town into a city.

Celebrate San Diego! The History & Heritage of San Diego’s Jewish Community explores this fascinating and vivid history from the pioneer era to the present day.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS! On June 10, 2017, the San Diego History Center’s annual gala celebrates the achievements and contributions of the Jewish community. The Makers of San Diego History event will be held at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla. Sponsorship opportunities are available for both the exhibition and gala.
