Help Vulnerable Children and Families Like Kassandra’s
Do you have a heart for children and desire that every child live in a safe, stable and nurturing home? Become a partner with Home Start today!
For 47 years, Home Start’s team has strengthened vulnerable families. To effectively prevent and treat child abuse, they provide life-changing services such as parenting education, housing, employment skills, case management and behavioral health services. In fact, over 18,000 low to moderate-income families and children benefit each year from Home Start’s programs!
One of these is their Maternity Housing Program (MHP). MHP provides safe, stable housing and wrap-around supportive services to give moms and children facing homelessness the skills and support needed to get back on their feet, including mothers like Kassandra.
Kassandra had a rough start in life as both of her parents were drug addicts. Her dad passed away from an overdose when she was 5, and her mom struggled with addiction. As a result, this young woman faced many traumatic experiences growing up, including foster homes, group homes, human trafficking, domestic violence and homelessness.
Fortunately, after fleeing an unhealthy relationship two years ago and in a shelter with her baby, Kassandra was referred to Home Start. She and her son moved into their own Home Start apartment, and her second child was born that fall. He has never experienced homelessness. Ever since, Kassandra has taken full advantage of the life-changing resources offered by the MHP.
The first year she participated in weekly parenting education. Her case manager helped her find childcare so that she could enroll in college. She is majoring in business and hopes to start her own company someday. And, just this month, Home Start hired Kasandra as their Peer Counselor – a special position designed for an MHP graduate to help and encourage other young homeless women facing similar situations.
