Feeding San Diego.

Denise is ready for another day at school. She has her backpack on and a smile across her face. Denise may be shy but she has a passion for learning. She likes after school programs the best. “We get taught new things, and when we are taught new things, we get smarter!” exclaims Denise.

Denise attends the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) that is offered at her school during summer break when thousands of children lose access to breakfast and lunch programs, a critical source of nutrition.
Feeding San Diego works to meet Denise’s and thousands of other local children’s needs by serving as one of the few nonprofit sponsors of SFSP in San Diego County. The program, funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and administered by the California Department of Education (CDE), provides free lunches and snacks to children and teens throughout the summer months.

Hunger doesn’t take a summer vacation when school food programs do. With 1 in 5 San Diego children facing food insecurity, Feeding San Diego strives to fill this gap through direct-to-client programs like SFSP and others.
