The year 2020 will go down in history. First came the pandemic, then economic downturn, job loss and financial insecurity, racial unrest, wildfires raging across California while the Atlantic hurricane season broke records. Finally, the 2020 US election, with more than 140 million votes cast. In this raw and fragile place we find ourselves, 2020 has reminded us that our lives are more intertwined than we realize. We rise together and we fall together. There is an interconnectedness that binds us. We are each other’s safekeepers – each other’s hope.

Here in San Diego County, the pandemic has exacerbated the hunger crisis. The need for food assistance has surged by at least 50%. Thousands of people are living on the brink of hunger, many for the first time. People who were gainfully employed six months ago are now struggling to feed themselves and their families.

Yet, in the darkness, there is hope and light. Dan Shea, the CEO of Feeding San Diego shared with GB Magazine, “With so much at stake, I must tell you how proud I have been to see our community step-up to meet the rising need for food assistance. Our staff, board of directors, partners, volunteers, and donors have risen to the occasion. We are proud of the impact the community helped us achieve in a truly unimaginable time. The road ahead is long, but we will work tirelessly to connect every person facing hunger with nutritious meals because we believe that food is a basic human right. No one should go hungry, during a pandemic or otherwise.”

Asking for help is not easy, but helping can be. A donation to Feeding San Diego, the leading hunger-relief and food rescue organization in San Diego County, gives hope to thousands of San Diegans in need:

“We would not have survived had it not been for this food distribution.” – Emily

“With this food distribution, I haven’t had to worry about where our next meal is coming from.” – Jennifer

“Sometimes I’m faced with the decision of either feeding my kids or feeding myself, and I always choose my kids. This food distribution has helped out a lot and made it so I don’t have to make that choice as often.” – Rebecca

Sadly, Emily, Jennifer and Rebecca are not alone. These are just three beneficiaries of the hundreds of food distributions Feeding San Diego hosts across the county. Last fiscal year, the organization provided more than 31.2 million meals to the community and 92 percent of that food was rescued. By diverting more than 27 million pounds of food from the landfill, Feeding San Diego averted nearly 25,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent from entering the atmosphere.

We are living in a time where so much feels out of our control, yet so much is within our control. We can choose to give hope and share joy this holiday season by supporting Feeding San Diego and the children, families, seniors, veterans and military families who rely on their services. We can emerge out of this year stronger by building the world back better. The time is now and each of us has a role to play.

Hope is a beautiful thing.
