Science is essential to our region’s economic, social, and cultural prosperity

The Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park is a place for people of all ages to explore the power and possibilities of science. Born and raised in San Diego, board member Peter Preuss, Jr. has been visiting the Fleet since childhood. As a sponsor and honorary committee member of the Fleet’s upcoming fundraiser, “Busting the Myths of Wine”, Peter shares with us his unique perspective of the center.

10 Things About Peter Preuss, Jr. and the Fleet Science Center

#1 Growing up, I was an only child. Now, my wife Erin and I have two beautiful boys, 2 and 6 years old.

#2 My first job was creating a website for a local startup company in San Diego. My first job after college was running my own media company which was quite an adventure.

#3 Our neighborhood has double wide streets with sidewalks on both sides. I enjoy taking my dog Cosmo out every morning to meet with the other dog walkers and chat about the neighborhood.

#4 I am a huge fan of marine biology and became an avid aquarist in college. I maintained a number of salt water fish tanks as well as volunteered my time to educate kids and adults at an aquarium.

#5 I was raised with a deep sense of philanthropic commitment. My parents were and still are deeply involved with the community. I divide my philanthropic time between the Fleet Science Center, The Preuss School, and the Gillispie School.

#6 My first memories as a child are the hands-on experiments and the amazing Dome IMAX movies at the Fleet Science Center.

#7 I have always had a curiosity that could only be quenched through the rigors of scientific discovery. I choose to support the Fleet so that future generations can experience the wonders of science.

#8 Despite the fact that San Diego is an international hub for science and technology innovation, California eighth graders rank #47 out of 50 states in science proficiency. To secure our city’s leadership in technological and scientific advancement, the Fleet is working to realize a San Diego where everyone has access to science and innovation.

#9 Women comprise 48% of the workforce, yet make up only 24% of STEM workers. “Busting the Myth of Wine” will raise funds for after school STEM programs targeting girls in grades 4-6 from Title 1 Schools.
