To get to where you want to go, ask somebody who is on their way back
Scoliosis causes an “S” or “C” shaped curve to the spine and affects 6 to 9 million people in the United States, many of whom are adolescents. Richard Gelbart is co-chairing this year’s “Give BACKS Hope” whch will raise money and awareness to help children with scoliosis. Richard’s family has been personally affected by scoliosis and is sharing their story to make the journey easier for those who are just getting started.
10 Things about Richard Gelbart & Setting Scoliosis Straight
#1 My wife Kris and both of our children have scoliosis. Our daughter’s scoliosis was impacting her internal organ structure so she had to have surgery.
#2 After Dr Peter Newton successfully performed the 9-1/2 hour procedure, we wanted to do something for Rady Children’s Hospital so we chaired their gala. Setting Scoliosis Straight asked us to chair “Give BACKS Hope” when our daughter signed up for their 20 year study.
#3 The Give BACKS Hope fundraiser rotates to a different city and this year, it will be in San Diego. This is our opportunity to reach out to people, educate the public and let families know there are people here to help them.
#4 Kris and I are fairly philanthropic; we have different charities we send money to and it feels good but this is different, Setting Scoliosis Straight is our passion.
#5 We want to take away the scary stigma surrounding surgery. Our daughter is now a freshman at Cal State San Marcos and has great rotation; she can play football and basketball.
#6 We are bringing our friend, Nolan Gasser in from Petaluma for a special performance. Nolan is a composer as well as the Chief Musicologist of Pandora.
#7 Give BACKS Hope is also a way to show our appreciation to the staff who care for the patients. It’s like the academy awards for the scoliosis field.
#8 The day after Give BACKS Hope, Setting Scoliosis Straight is hosting a Community Educational Program. My family will be part of a panel to share our perspective of what to expect pre-op and post- op.
#9 Even today, I think about will my daughter be okay when she’s 60? Luckily, we live in San Diego with great facilities and doctors.
