Time is our most valuable resource. Use it wisely.

Home of Guiding Hands (HGH) is the largest provider of services for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities in East County. HGH’s clients range from infants to children as young as eight in the Residential Program to adults who are well into their eighties. HGH also assists with transportation services, independent living assistance, tailored day programs, counseling, respite care and life planning.

Several HGH staff members took it upon themselves to shelter in place with some of HGH’s most vulnerable clients to ensure their safety during the COVID-19 crisis. Like the HGH staff, Stacey Poon-Kinney, who is the Chef/Owner of The Trails Eatery and Home of Guiding Hands Board Secretary/Second Vice President, has also risen to the occasion to help those most in need.

10 Things About Stacey Poon-Kinney & Home of Guiding Hands

#1 I grew up in Santa Monica, San Diego and Montana.

#2 I think everyone should be able to cook.

#3 Rome, Tokyo and Hawaii are 3 of my favorite places that I have been.

#4 Future destinations on the list: Switzerland, Prague, Morocco and Rarotonga. Travel is a BIG DEAL in our family. We have a world map at home with blue pins for where we have been and gold pins for where we want to go.

#5 I have a thing for jumping out of perfectly good airplanes. I want to be able to jump with other people and do formations which means getting my Class A Skydiving License.

#6 I was a professional B-Girl (breakdancer).

#7 Years ago, The Trails suffered a catastrophic flood and was shut down for seven weeks. It could have caused us to lose the business. However, we used it as an opportunity to increase efficiencies, create a new menu, and reach out to the community. We stayed positive. Our community and staff rallied behind us and we re-opened better than ever.

#8 I have been most surprised by how quickly life can change and how, often, a difficult situation clears the path for a blessing to grow.

#9 HGH’s Companionship Dog Program operates in six of their homes and has enhanced the health as well as the quality of life of the residents.

#10 Sally is a member of our Independent Living Program and shares a condominium with two of her close friends – one of whom is also in our program. Sally is well supported by her family and her HGH counselor who assists Sally with budgeting, grocery shopping, healthy meal planning and general problem solving. Sally regularly attends HGH events but in light of recent COVID-19 restrictions, HGH is postponing our annual June Gala, until September.
