“If you want to walk fast, walk alone. If you want to walk far, walk together.”

Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego is the largest source of comprehensive pediatric medical services in San Diego, southern Riverside and Imperial counties. Rady Children’s is the only hospital in the San Diego area dedicated exclusively to pediatric healthcare and is the region’s only designated pediatric trauma center. Because Rady Children’s is a nonprofit organization, Dr. Ellen Golka Moxham knows that the hospital relies on donations to support its mission. A longtime Charity Ball Committee supporter and volunteer, Dr. Moxham currently serves on the 112th Anniversary Charity Ball Special Edition Program Committee and on the Charity Ball Advisory Committee.

10 Things About Ellen Golka Moxham, PhD and Rady Children’s Hospital

#1 I was raised on our family farm on the prairies of Alberta, Canada. The night skies, featuring the Milky Way and northern lights, were spectacular.

#2 My husband Jim and I love to be outdoors in the beauty of nature. Skiing, hiking and sailing with our friends and family brings us great joy.

#3 Rather than having a bucket list, I try to savor each day.

#4 We have two affectionate Helen Woodward rescue cats – Tango and Tutu. Both have loud purrs and great personalities.

#5 Living perched above a canyon, bird watching has become a favorite pastime. For my 65th birthday, we traveled to Nebraska and experienced what Jane Goodall calls “one of the natural wonders of the world” – the magnificent spring migration of the Sandhill Cranes.

#6 How we choose to respond to the challenges of the day is often more important than the challenges themselves. Stay calm, gather the facts, collaborate and create solutions.

#7 In my years as a clinical psychologist, I have seen first-hand the difference early diagnosis and treatment can have on the health and wellbeing of patients. That is why the work Rady Children’s is doing in the area of mental health is so critical.

#8 For the first time since 1946, we will not gather for the traditional Charity Ball. Instead we will achieve our mission by focusing our fundraising on the 112th Anniversary Special Edition Program, benefiting Behavioral Health programs and services at Rady Children’s Hospital.

#9 Rady Children’s pediatric mental health care providers expect to see a surge in the number of children who require treatment following the current pandemic. They know that early intervention can help stem the long-term consequences of untreated mental health concerns that can cause physical health issues in adulthood.

#10 Beginning in 1909, the Charity Ball is San Diego’s longest-running philanthropic event. It is a great honor to be part of this long-standing tradition of women working together in support of San Diego’s most important asset – our children.
