Celebrating Fifteen years in the heart of Old Town.
If you are not familiar with the award-winning professional theatre in Old Town, you should be. Cygnet began in 2003 at a suburban storefront theatre with just 40 subscribers and a budget of $212,000. Fifteen seasons later, they are one of San Diego’s artistic leaders with more than 2,400 subscribers and a budget just shy of $3,000,000. Last year, Cygnet was one of only 12 theatres across the country to receive a $10,000 grant from the American Theatre Wing, creator of the Tony Awards, to recognize and support the most promising emerging theatre companies.
And their fifteenth season promises to be just like when YOU were fifteen… without all those annoying “changes”. Do you remember? Everything was exciting, emotional, and life or death…
When you are fifteen you just want to have fun, and that is how the season kicked off, with the laugh-out-loud musical comedy Animal Crackers (closing August 13), based on the original Marx Brothers Broadway hit. In the fall, embrace the dreams, struggles and innocence of adolescence with the Pulitzer-prize winning play, you may remember it as the movie from 1972, The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds. Next up is The Legend of Georgia McBride, about an Elvis-impersonator-turned-drag-queen in an uplifting story about family. A Cygnet tradition returns for the holidays with the family favorite A Christmas Carol. The first play of 2018 is The Last Wife – a contemporary and feminist take on the story of Henry the VIII’s strong-minded wife, Katherine Parr. In the Springtime, the theatre revisits the popular Sondheim musical A Little Night Music. Closing the season is the world premiere of The Wind and the Breeze, which was first introduced to Cygnet audiences through the Bill and Judy Garrett Finish Line Commission.
