As the Chicano Federation of San Diego County celebrates its fiftieth year of serving the San Diego community, they are also celebrating another special anniversary: the twentieth anniversary of their partnership with the Latino Social Work Network for a Holiday Food Basket drive.

For twenty years, Latino Social Work Network volunteers have carried forward the holiday tradition of providing families served by the Chicano Federation’s programs with Holiday Food Baskets to ensure that these families have food to celebrate the holidays. For many of the families served by the Chicano Federation, this generous act gives them the opportunity to celebrate the holidays with a delicious meal that otherwise might not be possible.

Latino Social Work Network, formerly Trabajadores de la Raza, has existed since the 1960s. The Network is made of up of individuals who hold social work positions, many with Masters in Social Work. In 1999, when Dr. Maria Zuniga, now a retired professor from San Diego State University, served on the Chicano Federation Board of Directors, she used funds donated from the Community Service Association of San Diego Unified School District to create food baskets for the families of Barrio Logan Child Development Center. Through this effort, two students, Omar Lopez and Emilio Ramos, helped organize the Latino Social Work Student Network to participate in what would become an annual event with Latino Social Work Network. This year marks the 20-year anniversary of this beautiful tradition.

Each year the local chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, local unions such as SEIU Local 221, students and community members assemble the food baskets. Chicano Federation de San Diego celebra sus quince años al servicio de la comunidad de San Diego junto a otro especial aniversario: los veinte años de asociación con Latino Social Work Network for a Holiday Food Basket drive.

Durante veinte años, los voluntarios de Latino Social Network han venido realizando un tradicional acto solidario: entregar canastas de comida para las fiestas para las familias más necesitadas que son asistidas por los programas de Chicano Federation. Para muchas familias a las que asiste la Chicano Federation, este generoso acto les brinda la oportunidad de celebrar las fiestas con una deliciosa comida que de otra manera podría no ser posible.

Latino Social Work Network, anteriormente conocido como Trabajadores de la Raza, existe desde 1960. The Network está formado por personas con puestos laborales en ámbitos sociales, muchas con maestrías en trabajo social. En 1999, mientras se encontraba en la comisión directiva de Chicano Federation, la Dra. Maria Zuniga, hoy en día una profesora jubilada de la universidad estatal de San Diego, utilizó fondos donados por Community Service Association of San Diego Unified School District (la Asociación de servicios comunitarios del distrito escolar de San Diego Unified) para realizar las canastas de comida para las familias del Barrio Logan Child Development Center (Centro comunitario de desarrollo infantil de Barrio Logan). Por medio de este esfuerzo, dos estudiantes, Omar López y Emilio Ramos, ayudaron a que el Latino Social Work Student Network participe del evento anual en conjunto con Latino Social Work Network. Este año se cumplen los veinte años de esta linda tradición.

Cada año, el capítulo local de la National Association of Social Workers (Asociación nacional de trabajadores sociales), sindicatos locales como SEIU Local 221, estudiantes y miembros de la comunidad, se reúnen para armar las canastas.
