Making Our Community Stronger.

gtk amistadThe mission of Casa de Amistad is to provide tutoring, educational support and character development to underserved children, teens and their families in the coastal North County San Diego area. They are inspiring the next generation of leaders through tutoring, music and leadership.

The population Casa de Amistad seeks to assist experiences lower graduation rates and is at higher risk of dropping out of school than their mainstream counterparts. They also tend to experience high levels of stress stemming from social, financial and academic challenges. These stressors, along with the academic pressures of attending the high-performing schools in our area – where students have high levels of English expertise – lead to higher dropout rates for this underserved group.

Approximately 200 students in preschool through twelfth grade attend Casa de Amistad on a weekly basis. Many stay with the program, and often the same mentor, over a course of several years. Through word of mouth, the message of student success in the Study Companions program has spread; they are striving to keep up with demand.

Casa de Amistad also partners with the San Diego Youth Symphony. Students in fourth through sixth grade receive free music lessons on the violin, cello or viola twice a week.

They are currently seeking new volunteers to serve as tutors and mentors for their K-12th grade students, which is held weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Volunteers can pick the session they would like to attend and the age of student(s) that they would prefer to work with. As study companions, volunteers meet with their student(s) each week to help with homework and serve as a positive role model.

Casa de Amistad will provide an orientation and training to all new volunteers. To learn more about Casa de Amistad, please visit www.casadeamistad.org or to volunteer, email volunteer@casadeamistad.org.
