“Let others play at other things. The king of games is still the game of kings.”
It seems that polo is all the rage this summer and that wherever you go, people are talking about it! It’s been described as the most elite and chic activity for 2011 and countless media sources have credited it for bringing the British royal couple to California. And while many are just discovering the magic of polo, the sport’s history is long and rich; dating back to Ancient Persia, where it was the official pastime of kings, emperors and shahs. So, if all this talk of pageantry and royals has piqued your senses and left you wondering what all the excitement is about, then you’re in luck; there is a thriving polo club right here in San Diego.
This year marks the San Diego Polo Club’s 25th anniversary in Rancho Santa Fe and so far they have had their most successful season to date. On June 12th, the season kicked off with antique bi-planes and beautifully sundress-clad women everywhere you looked. The Polo Club is without a doubt the best spot to be in San Diego on our beautiful Sunday afternoons. The tournaments have had capacity crowds in attendance throughout the first half of the season, welcoming many new faces and groups to the polo club. In addition, The Polo Club has also launched new partnerships with local businesses, media partners and organizations such as Saving Horses, American Red Cross, WiLDCOAST, Kids Korps USA and TERI’s Therapeutic Riding Program.
The Polo Club has many exciting events planned for the second half of the season including: their first ever “Movie Under the Stars” night on September 10th, The Willis Allen Memorial Cup presented by Giving Back Magazine benefitting the San Diego Opera and the San Diego Symphony on September 18th and the Closing Day matches and festivities on October 2nd. So mark those calendars, polish those champagne flutes, pick out that perfect over-sized hat and come learn for yourself what all the talk is about. We promise you won’t be disappointed!
Matches start at 1:00PM. Bring this article and receive 2 for 1 general admission at the gate.
