Improving the lives of people and animals

California Coast Credit Union has a long and proud legacy of supporting schools, non-profits and other organizations that make the San Diego area a great place to live, work and play. One of those organizations that Cal Coast supports is the San Diego Humane Society. With a partnership spanning over a decade, Cal Coast and the San Diego Humane Society are dedicated to improving the lives of people and animals in our local communities.

In 2018, more than 27,000 domestic and wild animals were admitted at the San Diego Humane Society, provided shelter, life-saving care and wellness services at their various campus locations. The Humane Society’s PAWS Program, which offers animal care services for low-income families, seniors, chronically ill and disabled pet parents facing financial hardships, provided 1.3 million pet meals to help them keep their pets.

Last year alone, the San Diego Humane Society has touched the lives of 537,354 people and 65,954 animals. Although their advanced medical treatments and services come at a hefty price tag for the organization, these critical services and programs could not be provided without the help of their staff, volunteers, generous donors, supporters and the tireless efforts of their community partnerships and event sponsors, including Cal Coast.

Cal Coast has collaborated with the San Diego Humane Society for various fundraising opportunities, such as their Giving Tuesday social media effort and Day of Giving donor match campaign. These efforts have been successful in raising awareness and funds for medical and behavioral services for homeless animals and injured wild animals in their care. Cal Coast has been a key sponsor of the Humane Society’s very popular Fur Ball gala for four consecutive years and has also donated high-demand items such as concert tickets and experience-driven giveaways for their auction.

In addition to the corporate support, the staff at Cal Coast has raised thousands of dollars in their Annual Walk for Animals in Escondido and Liberty Station. During the walks, Cal Coast has a large presence of over 60 employees along with their family and friends walking in support. The credit union also offers a “Cash for a Cause” where Cal Coast donates $25 to the San Diego Humane Society’s PAWS program for each walker that opens a new account.

Looking ahead into 2019, Cal Coast has launched a series of free financial workshops for San Diego Humane Society staff and volunteers. Workshop topics range from money management to dealing with debt and are designed to help their staff achieve their financial dreams. Their Community Relations Department will also host more internal adoption events at their corporate office for their staff, where San Diego Humane Society provides free adoption and training resources and are accompanied by adoptable pet companions in their lunch hour. The event is a big hit with staff from the Cal Coast headquarters and has drawn the enthusiastic participation of employees of nearby companies. It is always exciting to see the Cal Coast family add new members by adopting a new pet!

In the years ahead, Cal Coast and the San Diego Humane Society look forward to collaborating on more fundraising projects to further their shared mission of giving back to the communities they serve.
