A world-famous opera star in an intimate cabaret performance, a highly-respected philanthropist honored for her dedication to the community, and seating tables inspired by the fairy tale Hansel and Gretel; these are the elements that will make up San Diego Opera’s 2020 Opera Ball. On Saturday, January 25, 2020 starting at 6 PM, San Diego Opera will present “A Night in the Woods” chaired by Sarah B. Marsh-Rebelo, and honoring Carol Lazier for her philanthropic contributions to the community. To celebrate in style, opera superstar Patricia Racette will perform an intimate cabaret performance at the exclusive Oxford Social Club at the Pendry Hotel.
“The San Diego Opera Lover’s Ball, ‘A Night in the Woods’, begins in San Diego’s newest and hottest nightlife destination and the perfect venue for a private performance by world-renowned opera star Patricia Racette,” Sarah B. Marsh-Rebelo shared with GB Magazine. “After the performance we will move to the Grand Ballroom for dinner, the program and dancing. It is a pleasure to once again Chair the San Diego Opera Lover’s Ball. Please share this evening with us as we celebrate Carol Lazier for her remarkable philanthropic commitment to our beloved San Diego Opera.”
This is the second Opera Ball chaired by Sarah B. This year she is joined by a wonderful host committee of community members including Candace Carroll Esq., Joann Clark, Dr. Joyce M. Gattas, Phyllis Harris, Joan Henkelmann, Evelyn Lamden, Veronica Leff, Diana Lombrozo, Zandra Rhodes, Linda Spuck, Maria Stanley, Susan Ulevitch, Armi Williams and Sara Zaknoen MD.
Carol Lazier has been an enthusiastic donor, volunteer, and founder in the San Diego nonprofit world for more than 20 years. She is perhaps best known for spearheading the 2014 effort to avoid closure of San Diego Opera with a million-dollar board challenge that energized the entire community. She completed a three-year term as the President of the Board and then served as Chair of the Board. In 2015, she was named Philanthropist of the Year by the Association of Fundraising Professionals. When asked why she is such a staunch supporter of the arts, she shared “The arts connect us as human beings. They’re a unifying force. Art nourishes the soul so we can do what we need to do with the rest of our lives.”
Considered one of the preeminent singing actresses of our time, the black-tie evening’s performer Patricia Racette has sung leading roles at the major houses of the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Royal Opera House, La Scala, Paris Opera, San Diego Opera and many more. The ballroom will have décor inspired by Hansel and Gretel, which opens on the San Diego Opera stage on February 8, 2020. After dinner guests can explore the candy-land inspired dessert buffet set in an inviting lounge area as well as dancing and entertainment by The Mighty Untouchables.
