OLP Student Wins NCEA Award

Imperial Beach resident Isabella Cubillas ’22, a senior at the Academy of Our Lady of Peace (OLP) is one of only 10 students nationwide and the only student in the state of California to win the Youth Virtues, Valor and Vision Award from the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) selected from hundreds of applicants nationwide. The award annually recognizes extraordinary young people in Catholic schools in the United States who, through their selfless service, innovation and commitment to social justice, are changing the world.
Isabella is the founder and president of Tijuana Sin Hambre (Tijuana Without Hunger), OLP’s social justice club which supports a local nonprofit organization focused on ending hunger in the border city of Tijuana. Isabella volunteered more than 785 hours in 2021, delivering food and home goods to low-income families living in Tijuana. Collectively, the group has helped more than 20,000 Mexican residents. The group receives about 55 calls on average each day asking for help.
OLP’s club Tijuana Sin Hambre has 60 members committed to making a difference. Isabella’s role is to provide information to the club members about the realities of families in Tijuana, many of whom have children the same age as Isabella and her OLP peers.
Matthew Cordes, associate director of schools for the Office of Schools at the Diocese of San Diego, and representing NCEA, presented the award to Isabella on February 1 during Catholic Schools Week.
“Isabella is a tremendous representative of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, living out their charism of unifying love and their mission that all may be one,” Dr. Lauren Lek, OLP’s Head of School shared with GB Magazine. “We are grateful to her for being an example to all of us, and for carrying on their tradition beyond these walls; beyond, even, this country.”

La residente de Imperial Beach, Isabella Cubillas ´22, estudiante del secundario de Academy Our Lady of Peace (OLP), es una de los únicos 10 estudiantes a nivel nacional y la única del estado de California en ganar el premio Youth Virtues, Valor and Vision, otorgado por la National Catholic Education Association (NCEA), que se selecciona entre cientos de postulantes del país. El premio entregado anualmente, pretende reconocer a jóvenes que se destacan dentro de las escuelas católicas de los Estados Unidos, personas quienes, a través de su servicio desinteresado, la innovación y el compromiso por la justicia social, están cambiando el mundo.
Isabella es la fundadora y presidente de Tijuana sin Hambre, un club de OLP dedicado a apoyar a organizaciones locales sin fines de lucro enfocadas en la lucha contra el hambre en la ciudad fronteriza de Tijuana. En el 2021, Isabella trabajó de manera voluntaria más de 785, entregando comida y artículos para el hogar a personas necesitadas de Tijuana. El grupo ya lleva asistidos a más de 20,000 residentes mexicanos, recibiendo un promedio de 55 llamados diarios pidiendo ayuda.
El club de OLP Tijuana sin Hambre cuenta con 60 miembros que se han comprometido a hacer la diferencia. El rol de Isabella en el club es el de brindar información a sus miembros sobre las realidades de las familias en Tijuana, muchas de las cuales tienen hijos de la misma edad que Isabella y sus compañeras de OLP.
Matthew Cordes, director asociado de las escuelas para la Oficina de Escuelas de la Diócesis de San Diego y representante de NCEA, fue quien el 1° de febrero, durante la semana de las Escuelas Católicas, le entregó a Isabella este importante reconocimiento.
“Isabella es una increíble representante de las Hermanas de San José de Carondelet, viviendo el carisma de la orden con gran compromiso, unificando el amor y la misión para que todos sean uno”, le comenta a Giving Back la Dra. Lauren Lek, directora de OLP. “Estamos muy agradecidos de tenerla como ejemplo y que ella esté llevando nuestra tradición más allá de estas paredes, inclusive más allá de este país”.
