Be honest, be kind, work hard – good things will follow.

Jewish Family Services is dedicated to building a community of stronger families, greater opportunity and healthier and happier lives at any age. Thanks in part to the leadership of JFS Board Chair Marie Raftery, the agency has earned Charity Navigator’s highest rating for 11 consecutive years. Less than 1% of nonprofits nationwide can make that claim.

10 Things About Marie Raftery & Jewish Family Services

#1 I grew up in Boston and I love that city. But Boston is missing the beauty of San Diego which captivated me thirty-nine years ago.

#2 When I was 16, I worked in a supermarket’s Courtesy Booth, where folks returned bottles (remember that?), cashed checks and paid utility bills. At first it was intimidating, but then I learned the secrets to customer service and speaking to anyone – even if they were upset. And, it was my chance to talk to boys since I went to an all-girls school!

#3 Coasterra andIsland Primeare two of my favorite restaurants. Both feature great food and breathtaking views. This is why we live in San Diego!

#4 My favorite book is To Kill A Mocking Bird – by Harper Lee. The topics of racism, poverty, inequality, and social justice are as meaningful now as when it was released in the early sixties.

#5 I’ve had and loved both dogs and cats, but I am a dog person.

#6 When I was 18, I worked as a nannie’s assistant for Senator Ted and Joan Kennedy. It was the experience of a life time for a star-struck young girl.

#7 When I was young, my dad would take me to his business meetings. It was like an MBA class for kids; I learned that friendship can be part of business, integrity is essential, and honesty is the framework of negotiation. I miss my Dad every day.

#8 My husband Bob (Dr. Robert Rubenstein) and I are dedicated to Tikkun Olam, repairing the world and JFS as they help thousands of San Diegans transform their lives every year.

#9 JFS is bold, tenacious and innovative in addressing San Diego’s most pressing needs from homelessness to hunger to unexpected health and financial setbacks to the challenges of aging. JSF services helps families move from worrying about today to planning and working toward a brighter tomorrow.

#10 JFS has a volunteer who drives a senior to Rady Children’s Hospital each week, where the senior has volunteered for more than 25 years. When you give up driving, you shouldn’t have to give up the things you love. That is just one way we move forward together
