“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

MAAC is celebrating 25 years of providing safe, affordable housing that helps fuel economic mobility. MAAC originally focused on serving the Mexican-American Community but now works toward equity and justice for all communities.

Presenting Sponsor, Southwest Airlines will be represented by their superstar, Lidia S. Martinez at the 2019 MAAC Soirée – proceeds from which will support MAAC’s educational programs.

10 Things About Lidia S. Martinez and MAAC

#1 I was born in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua and at the age of 12 we moved to El Paso, TX.

#2 I think it is important for everyone to have moral courage which helps us match our word and action with our values and ideals.

#3 I have traveled quite a bit and fallen in love with many destinations – Venice, Paris, Cabo, Tallinn (Estonia), Stockholm (Sweden), San Francisco, and New York City. My hope is to soon travel to Santorini and Jerusalem.

#4 I have lived such a fulfilling life that I don’t really have a bucket list. Anything to do with family is always a top priority for me.

#5 In the work I do, I have seen many people stay silent when their voice is needed the most. I encourage my friends to speak up, especially when representing those who cannot be in the room.

#6 I have two grand-pups- Marley and Rho. They are adorable, smart, have beautiful personalities and I love them so much!

#7 When I’m having a challenging day, I do a lot of self-talk and listen to my favorite music. Music makes everything happy!

#8 Everything happens for a reason. This has helped me embrace the difficult challenges I have faced and gives me hope when things don’t go as planned.

#9 We recently went through a big re-organization in my department that was unexpected and had potentially negative consequences. I threw a fit (seriously!) but called someone I trust who helped me check my ego and see this as an opportunity.

#10 Sarah was a single mom who had left an abusive marriage. She was staying with relatives in a converted garage space when she received a call that MAAC had an apartment available. The affordable rent allowed her to support herself and her children and build a savings. To fulfill her dream of owning a home, she pursued career advancement and attended financial education and homeownership workshops. It was a slow, steady process, but she persevered, and 9 years later, Sarah and her family are proud first-time homeowners.
